To keep them honest, we'll issue a challenge of our own: Give Barry something to hit or be branded gutless (or worse) by the Barr-O-Meter, our completely prejudiced rating system that measures nothing more than whether a pitcher even gives Barry a sniff. Not whether it's the most sound strategic move, not whether it's the only feasible option, not whether it worked out in the end ... nothing, except whether Barry gets a shot at ending all the "yeah, but in the postseason ..." talk.
So, for each of Bonds' at-bats during the series, we'll be charting the Angels' manhood with the Barr-O-Meter, awarding up to four balls (baseballs, that is) for how much a pitcher challenges Barry.
Game 7
At-bat No. 1: Leading off the top of the 2nd inning against John Lackey, no score.
What went down: Bonds lined out to second.
Pitches: 1 ball, 1 strike
The end result: The Giants scored one run when Benito Santiago, who reached on a single, scored on a sacrifice fly by Reggie Sanders.
Barr-O-Meter rating: Much like fellow rookie Francisco Rodriguez, Lackey didn't shy away from Barry ... at least not with the bases empty.
At-bat No. 2: 4th inning, bases empty, one out, John Lackey on the mound, Angels up 4-1.
What went down: Bonds reached on an infield single.
Pitches: 2 balls, 2 strikes
The end result: Santiago followed Bonds with a single of his own, but both were stranded after J.T. Snow and Sanders were retired on flyballs.
Barr-O-Meter rating: Lackey again went right at Bonds, but remember the bases were empty when he did so.
At-bat No. 3: 6th inning, bases empty, one out, Brendan Donnelly on the mound, Angels up 4-1.
What went down: Bonds popped up on a pitch out of the strike zone.
Pitches: 1 ball, 2 strikes
The end result: Santiago followed Bonds with a single and J.T. Snow followed Santiago with a double, putting runners on second and third. But Donnelly got out of the jam by striking out pinch-hitter Tom Goodwin.
Barr-O-Meter rating: For the third straight time, Bonds came to the plate with no one on base and for the third straight time the Angels pitched to him. Refreshing to see.
At-bat No. 4: 8th inning, bases empty, two outs, Francisco Rodriguez on the mound, Angels up 4-1.
What went down: Bonds walked on five pitches.
Pitches: 4 balls, 1 strike
The end result: Santiago struck out to end the inning.
Barr-O-Meter rating: Rodriguez didn't pitch around Barry, he just pitched him carefully.
Game 6
At-bat No. 1: 1st inning, runner on first, two outs, Kevin Appier on the mound, no score.
What went down: Once again, Bonds was intentionally walked, moving Jeff Kent into scoring position.
Pitches: 4 balls, 0 strikes
The end result: Appier induced Benito Santiago to pop up to first base to end the inning.
Barr-O-Meter rating: No balls. But what else is new from the Angels?
At-bat No. 2: Leading off the top of the 4th inning against Appier, no score.
What went down: Bonds walked ... but not intentionally.
Pitches: 4 balls, 1 strike
The end result: Santiago grounded into a double play and J.T. Snow also grounded out to end the inning.
Barr-O-Meter rating: Hey, at least Appier threw Barry one strike.
At-bat No. 3: Leading off the top of the 6th inning against Francisco Rodriguez, Giants up 3-0.
What went down: See ya! Bonds hit an absolute bomb deep into the right-field seats.
Pitches: 0 balls, 2 strikes
The end result: Giants lead 4-0.
Barr-O-Meter rating: You gotta love K-Rod for going after Barry ... too bad it didn't work out better for him.
At-bat No. 4: 7th inning, runner on first, two outs, Rodriguez on the mound, Giants up 5-0.
What went down: Bonds worked the count to 2-2 and then struck out on a slider in the dirt.
Pitches: 2 balls, 3 strikes
The end result: End of the inning.
Barr-O-Meter rating: The rookie went after Barry again and this time was successful.
Game 5
At-bat No. 1: 1st inning, runners on first and second, one out, Jarrod Washburn on the mound, no score.
What went down: No walk this time as Washburn pitched to Bonds. And Barry made him pay with a double to right, scoring Kenny Lofton with the first run of the game.
Pitches: 2 balls, 2 strikes
The end result: The Giants tacked on two more runs, thanks in large part to four walks in the inning by Washburn, to take a 3-0 lead.
Barr-O-Meter rating: Washburn challenged Bonds. Don't count on him doing it again.
At-bat No. 2: 2nd inning, runners on second and third, one out, Washburn on the mound, Giants up 3-0.
What went down: No challenging Bonds this time, especially with first base open as he was intentionally walked.
Pitches: 4 balls, 0 strikes
The end result: The Giants scored three runs after getting a two-run single by Benito Santiago and a sacrifice fly by Reggie Sanders, increasing their lead to 6-0.
Barr-O-Meter rating: No balls. It was the correct decision, though, with first base open.
At-bat No. 3: 4th inning, bases empty, one out, Washburn on the mound, Giants up 6-0.
What went down: Washburn went after Bonds and got him to fly out to left.
Pitches: 2 balls, 2 strikes
The end result: A 1-2-3 inning for Washburn.
Barr-O-Meter rating: Hey, the situation made sense for Washburn to go right at Barry. So he did.
At-bat No. 4: 6th inning, bases empty, two outs, Ben Weber on the mound, Giants up 8-4.
What went down: Having just given up a two-run homer to Jeff Kent, Weber went right at Bonds and on the second pitch Barry smoked a double into the gap in left-center.
Pitches: 1 ball, 1 strike
The end result: No further runs scored, but Kent's two-run blast gave the Giants a nice four-run cushion.
Barr-O-Meter rating: Weber wanted to crawl in a hole after allowing Kent's homer. And Bonds didn't make his life any easier by rocketing his double off the wall.
At-bat No. 5: 7th inning, bases empty, two outs, Scot Shields on the mound, Giants up 12-4.
What went down: After allowing the second of Kent's home runs, Shields pitched to Bonds. Barry proceeded to hit a sharp single to center.
Pitches: 2 balls, 3 strikes
The end result: No further runs scored, but Kent's two-run bomb gave the Giants an even bigger cushion.
Barr-O-Meter rating: Down eight runs, Shields had no reason to pitch around Bonds.
Game 4
At-bat No. 1: 1st inning, runners on first and third, one out, John Lackey on the mound, no score.
What went down: In the exact same situation as the first inning of Game 3, Bonds was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Pitches: 4 balls, 0 strikes
The end result: Mike Scioscia looks like a genius ... at least for now, that is. Benito Santiago followed Bonds by grounding into an inning-ending double play.
Barr-O-Meter rating: No balls. The fear of Barry is absolutely incredible.
At-bat No. 2: 3rd inning, runners on second and third, one out, Lackey on the mound, Angels up 3-0.
What went down: Seen this before? Well, almost. With first base open this time, it was a no-brainer to intentionally walk Bonds.
Pitches: 4 balls, 0 strikes
The end result: Mike Scioscia is a genius ... and Santiago is a dog.
Barr-O-Meter rating: No balls. But who cares, especially when Santiago turns into an out-machine.
At-bat No. 3: 5th inning, runner on second, one out, Lackey on the mound, Angels up 3-2.
What went down: Bonds steps into the box and once again is intentionally walked.
Pitches: 4 balls, 0 strikes
The end result: Santiago delivered this time, driving in Rich Aurilia from second base with a single to center to tie the game at 3-3.
Barr-O-Meter rating: No balls. Nothing new here.
At-bat No. 4: 7th inning, bases empty, one out, Francisco Rodriguez on the mound, tied 3-3.
What went down: Rodriguez challenged Bonds, throwing five straight sliders, and got him to ground out to first base.
Pitches: 2 balls, 3 strikes
The end result: A 1-2-3 inning.
Barr-O-Meter rating: You gotta love this K-Rod kid.
Game 3
At-bat No. 1: 1st inning, runners on first and third, one out, Ramon Ortiz on the mound, no score.
What went down: Bonds was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Pitches: 4 balls, 0 strikes
The end result: Well, the Giants scored only one run -- on a groundout by Benito Santiago -- so walking Barry didn't turn into a big inning for San Francisco.
Barr-O-Meter rating: No balls. You talk about respect ... make that fear.
At-bat No. 2: 3rd inning, runner on first, one out, Ortiz pitching, Angels lead 4-1.
What went down: Bonds struck out ... on three pitches. Yes that's right, three pitches.
Pitches: 0 balls, 3 strikes
The end result: The Giants didn't score after getting a leadoff single by Rich Aurilia.
Barr-O-Meter rating: Hey, Ortiz challenged Barry and he didn't hit a moonshot. We're as shocked as you must be.
At-bat No. 3: 5th inning, runner on first, one out, Ortiz still pitching, Angels lead 8-2.
What went down: For the second straight at-bat, Ortiz challenged Bonds. But Barry won this time with a two-run bomb over the center-field wall.
Pitches: 1 ball, 2 strikes
The end result: Angels' lead shrinks to 8-4.
Barr-O-Meter rating: We commend Ortiz for going after Bonds. However, here's one recommendation: Don't throw one over the heart of the plate next time Bonds steps in the box.
At-bat No. 4: 7th inning, bases empty, two outs, Brendan Donnelly in the game, Angels lead 9-4.
What went down: Donnelly didn't come close to challenging Bonds as he threw four pitches out of the strike zone.
Pitches: 4 balls, 0 strikes
The end result: The walk didn't hurt the Angels as Benito Santiago popped out to end the inning.
Barr-O-Meter rating: Donnelly didn't give Barry a pitch to hit, despite having two outs and the bases empty. But at least he didn't intentionally walk him.
Game 2
At-bat No. 1: Leading off the top of the second inning against Kevin Appier, Angels up 5-0.
What went down: Appier got ahead early in the count, throwing strikes in two of the first three pitches. He then couldn't find the plate on the next three pitches, putting Bonds on first base.
Pitches: 4 balls, 2 strikes
The end result: An absolutely disastrous inning ensued for Appier after walking Bonds. J.T. Snow reached on a one-out single and Reggie Sanders followed with a three-run homer. To make matters worse, David Bell followed Sanders with a solo homer.
Barr-O-Meter rating: Leadoff walks often seem to kill pitchers, and this time was no different. But at least Appier did throw two strikes to Bonds.
At-bat No. 2: 3rd inning, bases empty, no outs, Angels leading 7-5.
What went down: After allowing a leadoff homer to Jeff Kent, Appier showed that he wanted nothing to do with Bonds as he walked him on four pitches.
Pitches: 4 balls, 0 strikes
The end result: Well, after walking Bonds the end of the night came for Appier, who was dreadful as he allowed five runs -- all earned -- in two-plus innings. John Lackey took over and got out of the inning with the Angels' two-run lead intact.
Barr-O-Meter rating: No balls. But it's tough to blame Appier as he was visibly shell-shocked after Kent's leadoff homer.
At-bat No. 3: 5th inning, runner on second, one out, Lackey still in the game, Angels leading 7-5.
What went down: With first base open, Lackey issued Barry a free pass.
Pitches: 4 balls, 0 strikes
The end result: Ben Weber replaced Lackey and threw gas on the fire. By the time Weber recorded the third out of the inning, the Giants had scored four runs to take a 9-7 lead.
Barr-O-Meter rating: No balls. And though it's hard to to argue with the decision, the guys batting behind Bonds once again made a team pay for putting him on base.
At-bat No. 4: 6th inning, bases empty, two outs, Francisco Rodriguez in the game, Giants up 9-8.
What went down: Bonds grounded out sharply to first base on the first pitch from the rookie Rodriguez.
Pitches: 0 balls, 1 strike
The end result: A 1-2-3 inning for Rodriguez.
Barr-O-Meter rating: That's what we like to see. Two outs and nobody on, go right after Barry. Way to go, kid!
At-bat No. 5: 9th inning, bases empty, two outs, Troy Percival in the game, Angels up 11-9.
What went down: Bonds hit an absolute moon shot on a fastball right down the heart of the plate.
Pitches: 1 ball, 1 strike
The end result: Angels win 11-10, but you talk about an incredible home run. Off the bat, it looked as if the ball was going to go out of the stadium.
Barr-O-Meter rating: Yeah Percival challenged Bonds, but we saw who the real man is in this matchup.
Game 1
At-bat No. 1: Leading off the top of the second inning against Jarrod Washburn, tied 0-0.
What went down: As Washburn said he would do, he challenged Bonds. And he paid for it as Barry smoked a 2-1 fastball over the right-field fence.
Pitches: 2 balls, 2 strikes
The end result: 1-0 Giants.
Barr-O-Meter rating: We commend Washburn for going after Bonds, but don't think for a minute that he'll do it again. And if he does, he'll be a fool.
At-bat No. 2: 4th inning, bases empty, one out, Giants up 2-1.
What went down: Washburn again went right after Bonds, getting a called strike with a fastball on the first pitch. After throwing two balls way out of the strike zone, Bonds swung and missed at a fastball. Washburn then struck out Barry on a fastball up and in. The shock was that Bonds actually chased a pitch out of the strike zone.
Pitches: 2 balls, 3 strikes
The end result: The Giants loaded the bases, but the Angels escaped without allowing a run when Washburn induced David Bell to fly out to right field to end the inning.
Barr-O-Meter rating: Hey, Washburn stuck to his guns and challenged Bonds. We're impressed.
At-bat No. 3: Leading off the top of the sixth against Washburn, Giants lead 2-1.
What went down: Bonds swung at the first pitch and grounded out sharply to first base.
Pitches: 0 balls, 1 strike
The end result: After retiring Bonds and Benito Santiago (on a strike out) to start the inning, Washburn gave up a two-out single to Reggie Sanders and then J.T. Snow sent Washburn to the showers with a two-run homer over the left-center wall.
Barr-O-Meter rating: Washburn is our new hero. Three at-bats for Bonds and all three times Washburn went right after him.
At-bat No. 4: 8th inning, bases empty, one out, Scott Schoeneweis in the game, Giants up 4-3.
What went down: Bonds walked on four pitches.
Pitches: 4 balls, 0 strikes
The end result: Ben Weber relieved Schoeneweis and kept the Giants' lead at one run by retiring Santiago on a ground ball and striking out Sanders to end the inning.
Barr-O-Meter rating: No balls. Schoeneweis, unlike Washburn earlier, didn't come close to throwing Bonds a strike.
