Editor's Note: ESPN analyst Tom Candiotti will write a scouting report on the starting pitchers for each game in the World Series. Here is the former knuckleballer's report on Game 3 starters Ramon Ortiz of Anaheim and Livan Hernandez of San Francisco.

Ramon Ortiz
Livan Hernandez
Regular season:
15-9, 3.77 ERA, 217.1 IP, 68 BB, 162 K
Postseason:
1-0, 10.13 ERA, 8 IP, 5 BB, 4 K

Ramon Ortiz
Ortiz

Ortiz is a stuff pitcher. He has a great moving fastball, a superb slider, and a great change.

He will need to be in control of his emotions from the get-go. He can get excited easily, so he will need to control his emotions and not try to overthrow the ball.

He needs to concentrate on the leadoff hitter each inning. His stuff is so much better from the windup that he will need to stay out of trouble early and keep pitching from his windup as much as possible.

He will need to keep Kenny Lofton off the bases and then pitch carefully to Barry Bonds. He matches up really well against the rest of the Giants' predominantly right-handed lineup.

Regular season:
12-16, 4.38 ERA, 216 IP, 71 BB, 134 K
Postseason:
1-0, 3.07 ERA, 14.2 IP, 3 BB, 6 K

Livan Hernandez
Hernandez

Hernandez has shown the ability to pitch and win some big games.

He needs to throw strikes early and then let the Angels chase his offerings. The first time through the lineup usually dictates how Hernandez is performing. Location is of the utmost importance for Hernandez.

Pitching inside to both the right-handers and the left-handers will be critical for Hernandez. He will need to establish that he can pitch on both sides of the plate with his hard stuff.

He will give up a lot of baserunners. Therefore, Hernandez will need to keep the ball down and concentrate on getting ground balls with runners on. Keeping the double play in order and the ball in the park are essential for Hernandez to succeed..

ESPN baseball analyst Tom Candiotti won 151 games pitching in 16 major-league seasons.
