Editor's note: ESPN analyst Tom Candiotti wrote a scouting report on the starting pitchers for each game in the World Series. Here is the former knuckleballer's report on Game 7 starters Livan Hernandez of San Francisco and John Lackey of Anaheim.

Livan Hernandez
John Lackey
Regular season:
12-16, 4.38 ERA, 216 IP, 71 BB, 134 K
Postseason:
1-1, 4.91 ERA, 18.1 IP, 8 BB, 9 K
World Series:
0-1, 12.27 ERA, 3.2 IP, 5 BB, 3 K

Livan Hernandez
Hernandez

Hernandez has shown he has the ability to pitch and win some big games. He won Game 7 in Florida in the '97, and could do the same in Anaheim.

He needs to throw strikes early and then let the Angels chase his offerings. The first time through the lineup usually dictates how Hernandez is performing. Location is of the utmost importance for him.

Pitching inside to both the right-handers and the left-handers will be critical for Hernandez. He will need to establish that he can pitch on both sides of the plate with his hard stuff.

He will put a lot of runners on. He will need to keep the ball down and concentrate on getting ground balls with guys on. Keeping the double play in order and the ball in the park are essential for Hernandez to succeed.

Regular season:
9-4,3,66 ERA, 108.1 IP, 33 BB, 69 K
Postseason:
1-0, 2.60 ERA, 17.1 IP, 5 BB, 13 K
World Series:
0-0, 6.14 ERA, 7.1 IP, 4 BB, 3 K

John Lackey
Lackey

Lackey has good stuff and knows how to use it.

He will need to control his emotions and stay calm and try not to get intimidated by the names of Bonds and Kent. And Lackey will be attempting to become the first rookie in 93 years to win Game 7 of a World Series.

He has the right combination of stuff to match up well against this Giant lineup. I can see him going to his breaking ball heavily against the right-handed batters. He will need to spot his fastball and keep out of hitting counts.

If Lackey is keeping the ball down in the zone, then he will induce a lot of ground balls. If he has trouble locating down, then the Giants will have their way with him.

ESPN baseball analyst Tom Candiotti won 151 games pitching in 16 major-league seasons.
