The question: What is baseball's best one-two hitting duo?

You could make a case for many teams this year. Houston boasts Jeff Bagwell and Lance Berkman, the Braves have Chipper Jones and Gary Sheffield, the Red Sox have Nomar Garciaparra and Manny Ramirez, and the Rangers have Juan Gonzalez and Alex Rodriguez. Flip a coin -- any GM would love all of the above.
My personal choice would be Bagwell and Berkman. They both are capable of
hitting with great power and high average. They will play half of their
games in Houston, which is very kind to hitters, and they have an added
advantage over all other tandems (except Chipper and Sheffield) in that
Bergman can switch-hit. I also like the fact that Craig Biggio will provide them
with many RBI opportunities, and they have protection behind them in the
lineup with Richard Hidalgo and Daryle Ward. | |

Even though neither tandem is off to a particularly smashing start, baseball's current best tandem is a tossup between Chipper Jones and Gary Sheffield in Atlanta, and Larry Walker and Todd Helton in Colorado. Over the course of the year, Chipper is going to get more pitches to hit, and Sheffield -- who hit behind Shawn Green in the second half of the season last year in Los Angeles -- has proved he is capable of doing serious damage no matter what the circumstances. Walker and Helton are an enormous force -- both tremendous hitters who also play in the greatest offensive park in the history of baseball.
