Kurkjian: Bordick trade good for Mets | |||||
Editor's note: ESPN's Tim Kurkjian reacts to the trade that sent Mike Bordick from the Orioles to the Mets for Melvin Mora, Mike Kinkade, Lesli Brea and Pat Gorman.
The New York Mets had one three-error game all last season. They had two three-error games Thursday.
It has become exceedingly clear the Mets are not going to win the division or make the wild card without getting a quality defensive shortstop, and Mike Bordick is a quality defensive shortstop. And they got him without giving up a significant amount, so this is a great trade for the Mets. Melvin Mora is a valuable utility guy, but the Mets don't need a utility guy, they need an everyday shortstop. In Bordick, they have an everyday shortstop who is also a much better offensive player than Rey Ordonez, and a significantly better defensive player than Mora or Kurt Abbott.
Bordick is not necessarily a two-month rental. It is not out of the question that the Mets will try to sign him after this season when he becomes a free agent. There are people within the Mets organization who would like to trade Ordonez and have Bordick as their full-time shortstop next year. Of course, the Mets will be in on the Alex Rodriguez Sweepstakes, but they probably won't be a big player, and they need to ensure they will be covered at short in the likely event they don't get A-Rod.
As for the Orioles, they probably can't trade Scott Erickson now that he's hurt, they'll be hesitant to trade B.J. Surhoff unless they get an offer that totally blows them away (which is unlikely), there is interest in their relievers Chuck McElroy and Mike Timlin, but nothing that looks like it'll materialize. It is feasible this is the only trade the Orioles will make.
