Don't blame it all on Rothschild

Larry Rothschild was fired Wednesday as manager of the Devil Rays after three consecutive last-place finishes and a 4-10 start this season. The Devil Rays replaced Rothschild with bench coach Hal McRae at the news conference on Wednesday.

Here are your thoughts on the firing of Rothschild:

Change doesn't make a difference
Managers have little influence on the outcome of the game. The D-Rays problem is that they have too much talent ...1988 talent. If they want to make a PR move, that's fine, just don't expect the change to influence the standings. Well, perhaps they will win 66 games instead of 64 games.

A new manager won't benefit lineup
It's about time they got rid of Rothschild. I like their choice of Hal McRae, but unfortunatly, I think McRae will have to put himself in the lineup in order to help the team out. Why not be the first player-manager since Pete "Should be a Hall of Famer" Rose?

Fault the players
Lousy decision. I am tired of overpaid athletes not being held accountable for their lack of performance. A manager manages. It is not his responsibility to teach fundamentals or to motivate "professionals". When will the players (see Vinny Castilla) step up and do the job they were paid to do?

Feel no pain for Rothschild
Couldn't have happened to a better guy. After allowing his team to behave the way they did in that August 2000 game between the Red Sox and the Rays in the aftermath of the Pedro Martinez and Gerald Williams incident, he doesn't deserve to be in baseball. Good riddance Rothschild...may you never step between the foul lines again.

We need player support!
It's very clear that the Rays management would like to shake things up in the clubhouse and get the players motivated to succeed. Larry Rothschild is the unfortunate victim of that motivational decision. Hal McRae will do a fine job as manager. He managed a lackluster Royals team to a .500+ record and I think he can do it again in Tampa, provided the players respond positively.

Tough critic
I am surprised he got four wins out of them. I know some minor league teams with more talent.

Give expansion teams a break
Well I'm not a Devil Rays fan by any means, but I think Rothschild was a pretty good manager. He didn't get things going as fast as the team the Rays will always be compared to the Diamond Backs... since they came in at the same time, expansion teams take a while to develop. They didn't develop as fast as they would have liked... it's all about the Benjamins

Lamar: Real root of problem
He deserved to be fired because of a lack of player support and respect. However, Rothschild isn't the real problem - the real problem is GM Chuck Lamar. How many games can the Rays expect to win with those players? Last year they blamed it on injuries to Wilson Alvarez and Juan Guzman, who are both middle of the rotation guys at best. It seems like Lamar changes his mind about what type of team to construct every year. And every year the Rays are worse than the year before. Getting rid of Rothschild was step No.2. Step No. 1 should've been to fire Chuck Lamar.

Hopeful fan looks to future
As far as I'm concerned, this firing should of taken place a long time ago. The Devil Rays need to clean house and hire John Hart as GM and Davey Johnson as manager.

Hal, Kansas misses you
Tampa Bay's gain is Kansas City's loss. Hal McRae was becoming a very fine manager when he got fired by the Royals. I am a lifelong Royals fan and I think part of the reason the Royals have been mediocre over the last seven seasons is because of the revolving door of managers which started with the untimely firing of Hal McRae. One thing the Tampa Bay fans can depend on is their team will always give 100 percent, just as Hal McRae did for the Royals. Congratulations Hal, you deserved the second chance.

Rothschild gets much deserved boot
Rothschild should have been relieved before the season started. He has shown no discipline towards his team and that's why he is getting no respect from his players now. Not too sure Hal will get any better results, but I think he will be a better coach in the long run and maybe next year will be a different story!

Move makes no sense
I think the Devil Rays showed a problem in their front office today. Fourteen games into a season is all you give a manager? Why did you bring him back this season if he only had two weeks to prove himself to the organization? You could have had a whole new coaching staff in place at the beginning of the season, but now you will have a new manager with the same coaches. No wonder no one wants to play in Tampa Bay right now.

Bitter Sox fan
What a shame he had to go! After the stunt he pulled against the Red Sox and Brian Daubach last season he should have got the hook a lot earlier !

Talent-starved D-Rays
Tampa Bay has got the talent of a Triple A team. Rothschild should count his blessings that he doesn't have to deal with the team anymore.
