Tapley responds in a big way

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- My impressions were that the Bronx had more of an "us with the world" attitude, with as many people that came down from New York. The total attendance was 42,000, the largest ever for a U.S. Championship, and a lot of those fans were from New York.

The "us against the world" attitude came more from Apopka. We heard from one of the mothers during the broadcast how they felt jealous of the attention the Bronx had gotten throughout the tournament because of Danny Almonte, his appearance and performance.

So on one side you had "us with the world" and on the other you had "us against the world."

In talking to the Apopka team throughout the week, they wanted another shot at the Bronx team, and the storyline from the beginning was revenge.

The Bronx team was the favorite coming in. They had gotten all the hype. Louilly Viņas had been throwing the ball well. And Stuart Tapley had a rough first inning in their first meeting, giving up five runs and the grand slam to Carlos Garcia.

The first inning was key for both teams on Saturday, and it looked like the Bronx responded best to the first inning jitters. But as the game progressed, Apopka came out of it.

When Tapley got out of the first inning only giving up the one run, you could see them get on their heels a little bit. But Apopka still had a lot of hope in its eyes compared to when the team faced Danny Almonte, when they knew it would be very tough to score a run. With Viņas on the mound, Florida had a lot of confidence, and we saw that as the game developed.

The turning point was Brandon Brewer's three-run home run in the third inning. Who would have expected that? To get it from an 85-pounder, the manager's son, to have them break on top and take a 3-1 lead -- that put the Bronx in a position to catch up.

The Bronx hadn't been swinging the bats well here in the Little League World Series. They had been doing it with pitching. They've scored some runs, but not really a lot of powerful runs, and when they do score runs, they score in bunches.

Brent Musburger, Harold Reynolds and myself didn't think the Bronx would be able to do that off of Tapley because he settled down real well after his first-inning nightmare against the Bronx in the opener. He's been an outstanding pitcher, especially with the lead.

There was a key at bat late in the game when Garcia was up with the bases loaded and one out, trailing 8-2. Tapley struck him out for the third time of the game. That was a big thing for Tapley to get over mentally. For him come in, control his emotions and respond in that situation was awesome.

That strikeout ended any chance the Bronx might have had.
