Grizzlies snap Nets' 9-game home streak

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Lionel Hollins thinks his Vancouver Grizzlies are finally learning what it takes to win on the road.

He's seen the proof in the last few nights.

The Grizzlies, who won just one of their first 13 road games, registered their second of the week Friday by beating the New Jersey Nets 101-91 behind Michael Dickerson's 28 points.

"To win on the road you have to play hard, play smart and play together," said Hollins, who is 4-6 overall and 2-4 on the road -- including a win over Miami on Tuesday -- since taking over the coaching duties on Dec. 16. "I think the guys understand what it takes now."

The Grizzlies not only played hard and smart, they outrebounded the Nets 51-32, made all 21 of their free throws and got the ball to the right man at the right time.

"My teammates were gettiong me the ball in the right places and I was getting open shots," said Dickerson. "But I think our defense was the key and our big guys did a great job rebounding.

The loss snapped a nine-game home winning streak for the Nets, who hadn't lost at the Meadowlands since Dec. 4. It was their first-ever setback at the hands of the Grizzlies.

"These road wins are giving us confidence," Dickerson said. "We have a good team with a lot of young players. It's taken some time but you can see the chemistry coming together."

Nets forward Kendall Gill argued that while Vancouver has some talented young players, the Nets should have never lost.

"We didn't play well at all," Gill said. "We missed a lot of open shots."

A 16-6 spurt midway through the second quarter snapped a 37-all deadlock and gave the Grizzlies the lead for good. Dickerson, who had 18 points in the first half, started the spurt with a layup and Dennis Scott added a pair of 3-pointers.

New Jersey made a late run and pulled to 82-77 on a free throw by Kerry Kittles with 6:27 left, but Mike Bibby hit back-to-back 3-pointers to wrap up the victory.

Bibby finished with 20 points, nine rebounds and nine assists, Shareef Abdur-Rahim had 19 points while Harrington added 16 points and 12 rebounds for he Grizzlies.

Kittles led the Nets with 21 while Keith Van Horn and Stephon Marbury each had 19.

Game notes
The Grizzlies tied an NBA record when they did not record a team foul in the third period...Prior to the game, Nets center Jayson Williams met with the media and predicted that he would beat the current deadline of 6-8 weeks that had been set by his own physician. "I'm going to change my training program and do less running and do more work with weights and get tested again in 3-4 weeks," said Williams whose right knee and leg were only 28 percent of full strength when he was tested Monday. ... The Grizzlies were playing the third game of a five-game road trip which started with a 91-87 win at Miami. ... Gill returned to the New Jersey lineup after missing Tuesday's game at Indiana with a sore neck.
