GAME FLOW
MIAMI (AP) -- All Scott Burrell needed to do was make one of three foul shots. And that's exactly what he did.
| | Stephon Marbury scored 20 points and had 11 assists for the Nets. |
Burrell hit a tiebreaking free throw with 5.1 seconds left
Saturday night and the New Jersey Nets beat the Miami Heat 90-89.
"I wasn't nervous. I wasn't stressed," Burrell said. "I just
had too much adrenaline going."
A pump fake by Burrell, who was just outside the 3-point arc,
drew a foul from Alonzo Mourning.
"I wanted to contest the 3-point shot," Mourning said. "They
had been hitting 3s all night. I kind of overlunged."
Burrell made his middle shot from the line.
"He got the one and that was all that we needed," New Jersey
coach Don Casey said.
Mourning tied a season high with 18 rebounds, scored 23 points
and blocked six shots. The final few seconds, however, did not go
his way.
After the foul on Burrell, the Heat called timeout. Mourning
then caught a pass near the basket but fell down.
Mourning tried to shoot from the floor and missed as time
expired.
"I lost my balance," Mourning said. "There could have been a
foul called or there could have been traveling called."
Miami coach Pat Riley was more emphatic about the last play.
"He was wide open," Riley said. "He did get grabbed and
pushed to the ground. You can't cry about it, but it was a definite
foul."
Naturally, the Nets viewed the play differently.
"Michael Cage played great defense, getting him off balance and
he fell down," Burrell said.
Stephon Marbury had 20 points and 11 assists, his sixth straight
double-double, for New Jersey. Kerry Kittles and Kendall Gill each
scored 16 for the Nets, who hit 10 of 21 from 3-point range.
Dan Marjerle, playing in his 800th career game, scored a
season-high 20 points for Miami, connecting on six of 10 tries from
3-point range.
Kittles had two of his 3-point baskets during a 15-point run
that gave the Nets a 74-63 advantage late in the third quarter.
Anthony Carter had six points during a 13-2 Miami rally that
tied the game at 78 with 5:22 remaining.
The Nets posted their 11th victory in their last 16 games
despite being outrebounded 46-32. It is the third straight game in
which New Jersey has claimed no more than 32 rebounds and has lost
the battle of the boards by at least 11.
Game notes Mourning extended to 60 his NBA-high streak of games with
at least one block. In doing so, matched the longest such streak of
his career. ... New Jersey's Jim McIlvaine, who sat out most of the second half of Friday's game against Vancouver after being
accidentally poked in the left eye by Kittles, did not start. He
returned to action wearing goggles midway through the opening
period. He picked up two fouls in 1:21 and returned to the bench.
... ... It was Riley's 328th game as coach of the Heat, matching
the total number of games he coached for the New York Knicks.
Riley's longest tenure was 727 games with the Los Angeles Lakers.
... The United States women's national basketball team attended the
game. Singing the national anthem were team members Nikki McCray of
the Washington Mystics and Ruthie Bolton-Holifield of the
Sacramento Monarchs.
