Sixers win for fourth time in five games

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

ATLANTA (AP) -- Despite scoring 31 points and leading the Philadelphia 76ers to a 101-98 victory over the Atlanta Hawks, Allen Iverson was angry with himself Saturday night.

Iverson missed a free throw with 7.5 seconds left, giving the Hawks a last chance to tie it. But Jason Terry missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer and the Sixers won for the fourth time in five games.

"It eats me up when I miss any shot at any time in the game," Iverson said. "We collapsed pretty much in the fourth quarter."

Iverson, who leads the NBA in scoring with a 31.1 average, had made four of six foul shots in the fourth quarter before his late miss.

Matt Geiger came off the bench to score 22 points and Tyrone Hill had 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Sixers, who nearly let a 14-point fourth-quarter lead slip away.

Isaiah Rider scored 35 points for the Hawks, who lost for 11th time in the last 14 games, with 35 points.

Atlanta drew within 99-98 when LaPhonso Ellis hit a running hook shot with 13.4 seconds to play.

Terry then grabbed Philadelphia's Theo Ratliff as they were running up the court. The Hawks rookie admitted he was not aware of the NBA rule that awards a free throw and possession following an away-from-the-ball foul in the final two minutes.

"I didn't know about it until coach (Lenny Wilkens) told me when I got to the huddle," said Terry, who had 14 points and six assists. "It's a tough way to lose a game."

Iverson made that foul shot, then went 1-for-2 for a 101-98 lead.

The Hawks called timeout and designed a play for Rider. But Ellis had trouble inbounding the ball and instead made an awkward pass to Terry, who missed a 3-pointer.

"We got a win on the road, which is what we needed -- especially when we're playing back-to-back," Sixers coach Larry Brown said. "We were able to hang in."

The Hawks dropped to 1-15 when trailing after three quarters.

"It's real tough right now," Wilkens said. "We just have to have patience. We've got some exciting young talent. We just have a lot of new people, and it's hard. That's been our nemesis this year -- turnovers. Just way too many times we turn the ball over."

Game notes
With the Hawks playing their first home game since Jan. 7, a moment of silence was held for Charlotte's Bobby Phills, who was killed Wednesday in a car accident. ... Bimbo Coles, who had started every Hawks game this season at point guard, was home with the flu. ... Eric Snow, who hit the game-winning shot in the Sixers' 102-100 victory over Orlando on Friday night, had 12 assists and committed no turnovers. ... Geiger was assessed a technical foul in the second quarter for taunting Dikembe Mutombo.
