Cassell puts Bucks ahead, keeps 'em there

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

ATLANTA (AP) -- With Ray Allen and Glenn Robinson tiring, Sam Cassell carried the Milwaukee Bucks.

Cassell finished with 31 points and 11 assists Monday in Milwaukee's 107-101 victory over the reeling Atlanta Hawks.

Bucks guard Sam Cassell scored 13 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter against Atlanta.

Cassell scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, including a 3-pointer that reclaimed the lead for good with 2:29 to play. He added a 12-foot baseline jumper that gave Milwaukee a four-point cushion with 12.6 seconds remaining.

"I tried not to force too many shots," said Cassell, whose two free throws ended the scoring. "With Ray Allen and Glenn Robinson on your team, you're going to get open shots. I just try to make all of the open shots possible."

The Bucks, who won for the fourth time in six games, erased a two-point halftime deficit and went up 76-64 on a 3-pointer by Allen.

The Hawks, who have lost 14 of 18 games, rallied to take two one-point leads in the fourth quarter -- the final coming on a pair of free throws by Alan Henderson at the 2:47 mark.

Atlanta scored only one field goal after LaPhonso Ellis' putback basket cut the Bucks' lead to 97-96 with 4:05 remaining. But Jim Jackson's 3-pointer with 32 seconds left still gave the Hawks a chance, and Milwaukee called timeout to get the ball to Cassell.

With rookie Jason Terry guarding him, Cassell spun to his left and got free to hit a 12-foot fadeaway jumper to make it 105-101.

Allen, who led the Bucks with 33 points in an emotional win over Toronto on Saturday, scored 13 of his 23 points in the third quarter. Robinson, who had 15 points, was only 2-for-9 in the second half, but his 3-pointer with 41.4 seconds to go put the Hawks in a five-point hole.

Scott Williams, who fouled out with 2:47 to play, finished with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

"Glenn had an awful second half and then hits the big 3," Bucks coach George Karl said. "And then Sam gets us the shot we wanted at the end, running out the clock."

Henderson, with 20 points and 11 rebounds, was one of six Hawks in double figures. Ellis contributed 13 points and 13 rebounds off the bench.

"A loss is a loss," Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "They're tougher because our bench came in and played well and gave us the production that I feel like we need."

Game notes
J.R. Reid, suspended one game and fined $7,500 for fighting in Milwaukee's 118-97 win over Toronto on Saturday, remained at the hotel. Under NBA rules, players suspended for fighting must stay away from the arena. ... Atlanta's Bimbo Coles missed his second straight game with the flu. Coles, who had started every Atlanta game until Saturday's 101-98 loss to Philadelphia, was on the bench in street clothes. ... The Hawks, who are 3-14 on the road, play Wednesday at Philadelphia and Friday at Miami. ... Dikembe Mutombo, with only five points and seven rebounds for Atlanta, matched a season-low with 22 minutes.
