Blaylock beats Rockets down stretch

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

HOUSTON (AP) -- Mookie Blaylock made the two biggest plays, sinking a 3-pointer with 38 seconds left and blocking Matt Bullard's 3-point attempt with 11.9 seconds left.

Blaylock's heroics came as Golden State was ending the game with a 9-0 run to defeat Houston 115-110 Thursday night.

It was the third win in five games for the Warriors (9-32), who began the night with the NBA's worst record. Golden State overcame a triple-double by Steve Francis, who had 25 points and career-highs in rebounds (17) and assists (14).

"It seemed like the (rebounds) kept coming to me, and I was trying to push the ball upcourt when I could," Francis said. "We gave the game away tonight. Mookie did a great job of leading his team and he hit that real big shot for them late.

"I commend him for that, but we really didn't play much defense at all," Francis said.

The Rockets, who led by four, 110-106, with 1:15 to play, have lost two in a row after winning six straight.

Blaylock's 3-pointer from the right side make it 111-110. Vonteego Cummings, who tied his season-high with 23 points, hit four free throws in the final 18 seconds.

Blaylock scored 18 points, including a 3-pointer off the fast break with 38 seconds to play that gave the Warriors their first lead of the fourth quarter, 111-110.

"That was the shot we needed," Blaylock said."I thought we had the numbers and fortunately it went in."

Coach Garry St. Jean also liked Blaylock's block on Bullard's 3-point attempt.

"What can you say about Mookie," St. Jean said. "His calf is sore. He might have been that high off the ground," he said, motioning with his fingers inches apart. "This is a terrific road win."

Blaylock admitted it wasn't much of a jump.

"Matt's not going to jump too high," Blaylock said. "We played together in Atlanta and I know his game. I was just trying to get in front of him and contest the shot. I was fortunate to block it, but he threw it into me."

The Rockets thought Blaylock fouled Bullard on the play.

"We made some costly mistakes," coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "Leaving Mookie alone hurt us, but three of the most horrendous calls ever hurt us, too. Bullard's foul not being called is ridiculous. It's a farce."

Antawn Jamison continued his hot streak by scoring 25 and grabbing 10 rebounds. Jamison was averaging 27.3 points and 13.8 rebounds over the previous four games.

Francis helped the Rockets pull away from a one-point lead at the end of the third quarter by scoring nine of his points in the fourth quarter.

Anthony "Pig" Miller added a career-high 19 points for Houston, one day after signing to play for the rest of the season.
