AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- On the day he was named to his first All-Star team, Allen Iverson didn't look very much like one.

In the final two minutes, Iverson missed three free throws, a jumper and had a potential tying shot blocked as the Philadelphia 76ers suffered a 90-88 loss to the Detroit Pistons, who snapped a six-game losing streak.

"I had a chance to send it into overtime," Iverson lamented. "My teammates go to me because they look to me to come through. This time, I couldn't do it."

Earlier today, Iverson became an All-Star for the first time as the final fan balloting was announced. His duel with Pistons All-Star forward Grant Hill never came about as Hill aggravated a bruised tailbone midway through the third quarter and did not return.

Iverson scored 27 points, nearly four below his league-leading average, and squandered several opportunities to seal the win. Philadelphia held an 87-85 lead with 1:37 to go when he missed two free throws. Just 26 seconds later, he split a pair from the line, where he was only 6-of-12.

Detroit's Lindsey Hunter made a jumper and former 76er Jerry Stackhouse followed his own miss to give Detroit an 89-88 lead with 35 seconds left. Iverson missed a jumper and Stackhouse made 1-of-2 from the line with 18 seconds to go, giving Detroit a 90-88 lead.

Iverson dribbled into the lane but lost his dribble and had to dive to the floor to salvage a jump ball with John Crotty with seven seconds left. He won the jump to teammate Eric Snow and took a return pass but his drive was blocked by former college teammate Jerome Williams. Iverson grabbed the loose ball and threw in a hook that clearly came after the final buzzer.

"I saw Jerome coming back and I thought I could beat him, but he got a piece of it," Iverson said. "He just made a great play. Usually, I get it over people as high as I shoot it, but he has great athletic ability and got a finger on it."

"It's like Michael Jordan. You know the ball is going to end up in his hands," Williams said. "The defense has to be ready to react. If he gets a step on you, it's going to be a foul. But I was in good position and blocked the shot."

Stackhouse, bidding for a berth as an All-Star reserve, scored 26 points and Christian Laettner added 15 and 16 rebounds for Detroit, which allowed less than 90 points for the first time since December 29 at Chicago.

"It was a much needed win for us, just to raise the confidence level of our team," Pistons coach Alvin Gentry said. "We beat a good team with a good record. I thought we gutted the game out. We did a good job of coming up with stops at the end of the game. I thought Jerome made a great defensive play at the end."

"We had lost six straight and Grant was out again, so you knew everybody was going to sell out all the time," Williams said.

George Lynch had 13 points and 11 rebounds and former Piston Theo Ratliff added 11 and 11 for the Sixers, who fell to 10-2 in games decided by three points or less and have lost three of four since a season-high four-game winning streak.

One week ago, Philadelphia made 30-of-32 free throws in a win over Indiana. However, the Sixers were just 18-of-30 from the line today and are 37-of-65 in their last two contests, losing both by a combined nine points.

"We just missed free throws and we did not make our shots," 76ers coach Larry Brown said. "When you're in a tight game like that, you must make shots. They made the shots at the end, and we could not respond."

Hill, also voted as an All-Star, scored 12 points before his injury. With 6:40 left in the third quarter, he tried to take a charge from Ratliff and went hard to the floor. He left and did not return.

"In the first quarter, I did a pretty good job of getting it loose," Hill said. "In the second quarter, I went out and when I came back, I could feel the difference. Then in the third quarter, it really tightened up and I felt I was doing harm to the team rather than helping them. I don't want it to go from something nagging to something chronic."

After Hill's departure, neither team led by more than four points. Iverson and Jud Buechler traded 3-pointers before two free throws by former Piston Aaron McKie and a layup by Tyrone Hill gave the Sixers an 83-79 lead with 4:23 remaining. McKie and Hunter traded jumpers, leaving Philadelphia with an 87-85 lead with 1:51 left.

"It's tough without Grant," Gentry said. "He's hurting and he's trying the best he can. It's not fair to him to have him out there when he's going through that kind of pain. It's tough to run when Grant's not there and Philly did a great job of taking us out of our half-court sets."

Michael Curry scored 13 points and Hunter added 12 for Detroit, which shot just 38 percent (30-of-79) from the field and was beaten on the boards, 47-44.

Snow scored 11 points and Hill 10 for Philadelphia, which shot 45 percent (34-of-75). Iverson made just 10-of-26 shots.

"We outshot them, we outrebounded them, I think we played better than they did," Snow said. "It's only from the free-throw line where they beat us. All we had to do was to hit three more and we'd have won the game."

A jumper by Stackhouse gave Detroit a 55-45 lead early in the third quarter but a dunk by Lynch capped an 11-1 burst and gave Philadelphia a 56-56 tie with 7:31 left in the period. The Sixers held a 71-70 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Laettner scored 10 points in the first quarter as the Pistons pushed the tempo and built a 32-23 lead. They widened the advantage to 12 and still held a 44-35 lead after a free throw by Laettner with 4:27 left in the second quarter.

Iverson came alive, making a pair of layups and setting up Ratliff for an easy bucket. He fed Lynch for a 3-pointer that pulled Philadelphia into a 44-44 tie with 1:13 left. However, Stackhouse scored five points in a 7-0 spurt that closed the half and gave Detroit a 51-44 lead.
