OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- The NBA's top scoring tandem didn't let the Detroit Pistons down Thursday night. Grant Hill scored 25 points and Jerry Stackhouse added 23 points and a career-high 11 assists as Detroit defeated the Golden State Warriors 116-108. "I'll be honest. We were tired, but we needed a win," Hill said. "We were desperate." Hill and Stackhouse average a combined 48.5 points a game. Christian Laettner added 19 points for the Pistons, who have beaten the Warriors the last seven times they have played. John Starks scored 22 points and Jason Caffey had 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Warriors, who had their season-high three-game win streak snapped. Vonteego Cummings added 18 points and Donyell Marshall added 16 points and 10 rebounds. Chris Mills scored on a short jumper to pull the Warriors to 101-97 with 3:12 to play, the closest they came since early in the game. "We got back into the game several times but didn't give ourselves a chance," Golden State coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "We killed ourselves with turnovers." The Warriors were still within four with less than two minutes to play, but Hill connected on a jumper, and Laettner completed a three-point play to extend Detroit's lead to 108-99 with 1:20 remaining. "They made some big baskets in the last two minutes," Golden State's Chris Mills said. "We had a chance to win it, but Grant stepped in and made some big shots in the end." The Pistons scored the first 11 points of the game, capped by a 3-pointer from Terry Mills, and never lost the lead. Golden State missed its first six shots during that time. Detroit shot 62 percent in the first quarter. "It's so hard to maintain leads on any team in this league," Stackhouse said. "They had a lot of momentum and we withstood that and held on for a good win." Golden State was down by 18 points early in the second quarter but was able to fight back to 63-53 at halftime. Caffey and Terry Cummings scored the Warriors final nine points of the half to spark the rally. The 11-0 run sparked a 42-point first quarter for Detroit, the most points allowed by the Warriors in any quarter this season. Hill scored 10 points in the first six minutes of the contest. "Sometimes that can be the worst thing," Hill said. "You know a team is going to make a run and you have to withstand that run." Jerome Williams scored 10 of his 12 points within a three-minute period that helped put the Pistons, who committed just one turnover in the period, up by 16 points with just under a minute to play in the first quarter. Game notesThe Warriors activated Marshall from the injured reserve list before the game and placed Chris Carr on waivers. ... Terry Cummings left the game for Golden State in the third quarter with a groin injury. ... Warriors trainer Tom Abdenour and Pistons trainer Mike Abdenour are the first brother training combination in professional sports. ... Warriors' guard Mookie Blaylock left the game with six minutes remaining in the first quarter after aggravating a strained hamstring and did not return. ... Stackhouse and Golden State's Antawn Jamison will both be graduating from North Carolina on Saturday with degrees in African-American Studies. ... The Warriors have topped 100 points in five consecutive games, the longest such streak since March 1997 when they went six games. ...
