VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) -- Allen Iverson was adamant
about playing hurt Saturday night. It worked out well for the
Philadelphia 76ers.
| | Allen Iverson was playing with an injured hip, but it didn't prevent him from scoring 18 to lead the 76ers on Saturday. |
Iverson scored 18 points, including the 76ers' last eight, as
Philadelphia beat the Vancouver Grizzlies 83-79 Saturday night for
their 16th victory in 20 games.
Iverson hurt his right hip Friday in a victory at Portland.
"I feel good because of the win, but coach (Larry Brown) didn't
want to put me in the fourth quarter because my hip was bothering
me," Iverson said.
"As the game went down, I asked him if I could get back in and
he said he didn't want me to get hurt any worse. I told him it's
not hurting any more than it did before he took me out. So he let
me play. Fortunately I was able to come in and just help my
teammates."
Vancouver tied a season low with nine points in the fourth
quarter after leading by 14 late in the third. The Grizzlies were
3-for-23 in the final 17½ minutes of the game.
Vancouver's Michael Dickerson had a chance to tie the game in
the waning seconds, but his shot was off the mark.
"It came off my hand wrong," said Dickerson, who led the
Grizzlies with 20 points. "When I shot it, I knew it wasn't going
because it came off my pinkie finger and it's supposed to come off
my index finger."
Vancouver (7-13) has won three of its last 15 games.
The 76ers finished up a road trip with a 3-2 record.
"It's nice when you win the last two games of a road trip,"
said 76ers reserve Toni Kukoc, who scored 12 points.
"If somebody told me before the season that we're going to be
16-4, I would be surprised considering we've had more games on the
road than at home."
Philadelphia is 7-0 at home.
Aaron McKie scored 16 points for Philadelphia, and Canadian Todd
MacCulloch had 11 points and six rebounds.
Vancouver's Mike Bibby had 17 points and nine assists, while
Shareef Abdur-Rahim was held to 12 points on 4-of-11 shooting.
"We were phenomenal in the fourth quarter," Brown said. "We
did a great job on everybody. We got every rebound, we held them to
one shot. We won with defense. We got a well-deserved win against a
really good young team."
Game notes Philadelphia placed guard Eric Snow on the injured list
with a broken right ankle, and activated guard Pepe Sanchez.
Sanchez went scoreless in seven minutes against Vancouver. ...
Tyrone Hill (right quad tendinitis) and Matt Geiger (right ankle
sprain) did not suit up for the Sixers. ... Vancouver hasn't beaten
the 76ers since its inaugural season of 1995-96. Philadelphia is
9-1 overall against the Grizzlies.
