ATLANTA (AP) -- The Hawks are starting to believe in themelves.
"The team is very confident right now," Jason Terry said after
scoring 21 points, including a tie-breaking basket with 1:27 to
play Saturday night as Atlanta beat the Indiana Pacers 91-87 for
its first three-game winning streak this season.
"As we taste success, we have to really focus in," Terry said.
"Whoever we play, we need to execute and really take on the
challenge."
Terry's driving basket gave the Hawks an 89-87 lead, and Roshown
McLeod added the final basket on a 10-footer from the right
baseline with 22.1 seconds to play.
"Defense on everybody's part is what won for us," said
Lorenzen Wright, who led the Hawks with 22 points. "I don't think
anybody is worrying about who's going to score. We're playing as a
team."
Jalen Rose scored 22 points for the Pacers, and Jermaine O'Neal
added 19.
"I feel great for the guys," Hawks coach Lon Kruger said.
"They hung in there and made big plays down the stretch --
defensively at key times, big buckets at key times. So many
different guys contributed."
Dikembe Mutombo added 12 points and 17 rebounds, including seven
on the offensive boards. The Hawks had a 46-37 edge in rebounding.
"Right now whenever we need that rebound, we don't come up with
it," Pacers coach Isiah Thomas said. "We just have to find some
way to rebound the basketball at the end of the game. It's just
want. It's just desire."
After going in front late in the first quarter, Atlanta never
trailed until O'Neal scored three straight baskets and then added a
free throw with 5:14 to play to give the Pacers an 83-82 lead.
The game was tied at 85 and 87 before Terry's driving basket put
the Hawks ahead to stay.
"I only had six rebounds tonight, so I'll kind of put it on my
shoulders," O'Neal said. "I didn't do my job."
The Pacers took a 7-0 lead at the start, but Mutombo had eight
consecutive points to start a 12-0 run that put the Hawks ahead
19-13.
Then, in the second quarter, McLeod's 18-footer started a 9-0
run 4:29 that Atlanta used to build a 56-50 halftime lead.

The Pacers had won three straight over the Hawks. ...
Mutombo had only one blocked shot, leaving him six from 2,500. ...
The victory in the second game of a back-to-back stretch was the
first in nine tries this season for the Hawks. ... The Pacers are
5-5 in the second game of back-to-back nights. ... The Hawks have
won five of their last seven games and have gone 9-11 since opening
the season 0-7.
