BOSTON (AP) -- Maybe life without Grant Hill won't be so bad for
the Orlando Magic.
| | Orlando's Pat Garrity scored only seven points against Boston, but his 3-pointer in the final minute was key. |
Pat Garrity hit a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 50 seconds left
Saturday and John Amaechi scored 23 points as the Orlando Magic
snapped a five-game skid in Boston by beating the Boston Celtics
95-90.
"Now that we know what our team will be the rest of the season
we can play accordingly," Magic coach Doc Rivers said.
Earlier this week, the Magic learned that Hill would miss the
rest of the season to undergo surgery on his left ankle. Orlando's
last win in Boston was 107-96 on November 2, 1997.
Garrity's shot broke a 90-90 tie and Michael Doleac hit two
free throws to ice it for Orlando. Tracy McGrady added 19 points,
seven rebounds and seven assists.
Antoine Walker led Boston with 26 points and 12 rebounds, Paul
Pierce added 15 points and Chris Carr had 14.
"It's coming down to the last few minutes and we are making key
mistakes," Pierce said. "Our rotation is giving up wide open
shots and not boxing out and that's costing us games."
Orlando committed three technical fouls in the first half, one
on an illegal defense and two on Darrell Armstrong who was ejected
after arguing an out-of-bouds call with 3:55 left in the second
quarter. Garrity got a technical in the second half.
"I was talking to my teammate and the next thing I knew (Jess)
Kersey came over and said 'you're out of here'," Armstrong said.
"I was cursing but I was talking to Drew (Andrew DeClerq)."
Boston went on a 16-2 run late in the second quarter and early
in the third to take a 54-50 lead on a 3-pointer by Pierce and a
three-point play by Kenny Anderson.
But the Magic answered with a 15-0 run capped by Mike Miller's
3-pointer with 5:33 left in the third quarter to take a 65-54 lead.
The Celtics tied the game at 90-90 on a jump shot by Anderson
with 1:10 left but the Magic scored the final five points.
Orlando turned the ball over 18 times but outrebounded Boston
51-36.
"We're losing games right now because we're not rebounding,"
Celtics coach Rick Pitino said. "If you give an offensive team a
free shot and a second chance, they're going to shoot a high
percentage."
Game notes Anderson has hit 21 consecutive free throws. ... Boston's
Tony Battie sprained his left ankle in the third quarter and did
not return. ... The Orlando Magic are the only team in the NBA to
have a winning record, 24-22, against the Celtics. ... Orlando is
9-1 this season when scoring 100 or more points.
