GAME FLOW
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) -- Shareef Abdur-Rahim's defense
on Glenn Robinson overshadowed his big offensive output.
Abdur-Rahim scored 38 points as the Vancouver Grizzlies used
their highest-scoring game of the season to beat the Milwaukee
Bucks 120-117 Sunday.
| | Shareef Abdur-Rahim makes a crucial defensive stop on the Bucks' Glenn Robinson in the fourth quarter. |
With Vancouver leading 119-117 with 8.1 seconds remaining, the
Bucks went to Robinson, who had scored 31 points. But Abdur-Rahim's
smothering defense caused Robinson to miss.
"I just wanted to come up with the stop," said Abdur-Rahim,
who shot 15-for-17 and had 11 rebounds. "It was a big stop and we
needed a stop. I feel like I have a prodigious appetite for being
in situations like that and sometimes I come through and sometimes
I don't."
Bryant Reeves grabbed the miss and was fouled, making one of two
from the line. Ray Allen's desperation 3-pointer was no good at the
buzzer and the Grizzlies won.
Vancouver coach Sidney Lowe was pleased with Rahim's defense.
"You could see his reaction afterward," he said. "He felt
good about that. He tried to lock down on the guy. He did a good
job. Glenn Robinson is a tremendous player. So Reef was big,
there's no question about it."
With Milwaukee leading 117-114 with 2:43 left, Rahim drove the
lane and was tied up by guard Lindsey Hunter. A jump ball was
called. Rahim wasn't watching when the ball was tossed, but
Hunter's tip somehow landed in Reeves' hands, who passed the ball
to Bibby on the perimeter.
According to the Bucks, Grizzlies guard Damon Jones called a
timeout and one referee blew his whistle. But when Bibby's shot
missed, Rahim hustled in for the offensive board and basket. Scott
Williams complained and was whistled for a technical foul, which
was converted by Rahim.
"He did blow the whistle," Bucks coach George Karl said.
"It's a rookie call. I was right next to him so I heard the
whistle. I don't know if it made us stop playing or what but that
offensive rebound was a big play. It gave them the opportunity to
win the game."
Williams was less diplomatic.
"He should issue an apology to me for being damaging to my team
and damaging my career," he said. "That's ridiculous. The
officiating was horrible, and I'll take the fine."
Milwaukee was 10-for-13 from the line while Vancouver was 30-for-32.
The 120 points were a season high for the Grizzlies and one
point off their franchise record. Abdur-Rahim's 38 points were also
one off his career high.
Damon Jones scored on a layup with 25.3 seconds left to give the
Grizzlies a 119-117 advantage.
Mike Bibby had 16 points and 14 assists for Vancouver and Reeves
had 16 points and eight rebounds.
Robinson scored 31 points for the Bucks. Allen had 28 and Sam
Cassell 24. The Bucks dropped to 2-8 against the Western
Conference.
The Grizzlies took their first lead to start the third quarter.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by Lindsey Hunter and Allen gave the Bucks
a 90-82 lead with 3:05 remaining in the third.
But when Tim Thomas was ejected with two technicals after
collecting his fifth foul, Abdur-Rahim hit four consecutive free
throws to tie the game at 92.
Bibby scored the first 10 points of the second quarter for the
Grizzlies, bringing Vancouver within 42-41. But a 15-4 run by
Milwaukee gave the Bucks their biggest lead of the half at 57-45
with 3:26 remaining.
The Grizzlies closed the half on a 17-6 run to cut it to 63-62.
The combined score was a record for points in a half at GM Place.
Game notes
Forward Jason Caffey didn't dress for Milwaukee because of
the flu, while Grizzlies guard Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf was absent to be
with his wife, who was in labor delivering their third child. ...
Allen set a Milwaukee record suiting up for his 329th straight
game. He broke Lee Mayberry's record. ... The two teams split their
season series last year with each team winning on the other's home
court.
