GAME FLOW
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- As Karl Malone observed, things can really
change in a couple of weeks.
Malone scored 15 points in just 24 minutes as the Jazz picked up
their sixth win in their last seven games following a five-game
losing streak, 100-78 over Golden State on Tuesday night.
"Everything was going against us (during the losing streak) and
now we're starting to turn it around. Tonight was another case of a
good team effort all the way around," Malone said.
Donyell Marshall led five Utah players in double figures with 17
points and 12 rebounds.
John Stockton added 15 points on 6-of-6 shooting in only 21
minutes of play.
It didn't even matter that the Jazz set a season-high with 30
turnovers.
"I guess we have to take it a little bit more seriously when we
pass the ball," Malone said.
"When you take a team like that and dismantle them like we did,
you get careless with the basketball," John Starks added.
The Warriors, who played their fourth game in six days and were
missing seven injured players, seemed too tired to take advantage
of Utah's miscues.
"We were obviously overmatched tonight and then we didn't have
a good shooting night, so we had no hope," said Golden State coach
Dave Cowens, whose team shot 31 percent.
Antawn Jamison had 20 points for the Warriors, who had their
two-game win streak snapped.
Dressing just nine players due to a rash of injuries, the
Warriors were in a tough position from the start.
"We caught a team that was shorthanded obviously, but we had
moments where we played very well," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said.
Many of those moments came early as Utah jumped to a 35-14 lead
with 8:26 left in the second quarter.
Jamison had 10 points while the rest of the Warriors managed
just four points on 1-of-18 shooting to that point in the game.
"We did a great job defensively. We limited Antawn and didn't
let their other shooters get off. That's what we have to do, shut
people down and get their key guys," Starks said.
The Jazz stretched their lead as wide as 48-22 with 2:43 left in
the second quarter after back-to-back layups by Stockton before
settling for a 52-31 halftime advantage.
With Erick Dampier, Danny Fortson, Chris Mills and Adonal Foyle
already out indefinitely, the Warriors had their bench further
shortened with recent assorted sprains to Larry Hughes (thumb),
Chris Porter (ankle) and Vinny Del Negro (ankle).
Jacque Vaughn scored 14 and Greg Ostertag tied his season-high
with 11 points for the Jazz, who shot 57 percent and never let
their lead slip below 18 points in the second half.
With Dallas losing to Philadelphia, Utah moved into sole
possession of first place in the Midwest Division with two games
left on its unprecedented eight-game homestand.
"We've been playing well as a team and I think we're back on
the right track now," said Ostertag, who blocked seven shots for
the Jazz.
Things got so bad for the Warriors that the Delta Center crowd
derisively urged Bob Sura to shoot each time he touched the ball in
the fourth quarter and cheered loudly with he hit his second shot
of the night (of 15 attempts).
The Warriors' only lead of the game was 2-0 and the game became
sloppy once the Jazz grabbed the 20-plus point edge.
Game notes The Warriors, who posted the opponent high point game
against the Jazz in their 125-114 loss on December 9, tied the
Jazz's opponent low half with 31 in the first half. ... Matchups
forced 6-foot-7 Chris Mullin to guard Olden Polynice, a
seven-footer. ... John Crotty played his first game for the Jazz
after undergoing preseason knee surgery. Quincy Lewis replaced
Crotty on the injured list with tendinitis in his right knee.
