GAME FLOW
TORONTO (AP) -- Tracy Murray's game-tying 3-pointer was ruled a
split-second too late, giving the Minnesota Timberwolves their 10th
straight victory.
| | Keon Clark can only watch as LaPhonso Ellis throws down two of his 18 points. |
Kevin Garnett had 30 points and Murray's 3-pointer was waved off
at the final buzzer as the Timberwolves extended their club-record
winning streak with a 108-105 victory over the Toronto Raptors on
Saturday night.
After Toronto's Alvin Williams drove to the basket with a few
seconds left, the ball was passed to Murray, whose 3-pointer sent
the crowd into a frenzy. The officials then met and waved it off.
Replays showed that Murray's shot left his hand a moment late.
"It was 50-50,? Garnett said.
Asked if he'd like to see instant replay in the NBA, Garnett
said: "For tonight, no."
Wally Szczerbiak had 19 points, LaPhonso Ellis 18, Terrell
Brandon 17 and Todd Day 10 for the Timberwolves, who shot 54
percent from the field.
"When we got the call I said 'Guys let's get off the floor and
get out of here,"' Szczerbiak said. "I think instant replay would
be good for the NBA to consider for next year. The call that was
made in the Vancouver-Laker game was clearly wrong, and here I
don't know if the call was right or wrong, but it would be nice to
get it right."
Vince Carter, playing with a sore left knee, scored 19 points
but left the game with 1:15 remaining in the third quarter and
didn't return.
"I wanted to cut Vince's minutes," Toronto coach Lenny Wilkens
said. "His knee is fine."
Antonio Davis led Toronto with 25 points and 13 rebounds.
"If I'm an official, I see the game going into overtime because
it was too close to call," Davis said. "The refs are human and
they make mistakes, but it is hard to swallow."
Wilkens said the Raptors were robbed.
"I'm damn angry," Wilkens said. "When I looked at the tape,
the clock above the basket showed 0.1 seconds when the ball was in
the air."
The Timberwolves led by as many as 12 in the second half, but
Toronto narrowed it to two on Murray's 3-pointer with 2:33
remaining.
Day followed with a 3-pointer, and Toronto's Keon Clark made two
free throws. After Toronto's Dell Curry turned the ball over, Ellis
had a dunk to make it 108-103 with 1:16 remaining.
Murray followed with a jumper to make it 108-105, but Williams'
3-point attempt with 20 seconds left clanked off the front of the
rim.
Brandon then tripped over Garnett's legs as the ball was
inbounded to him, allowing the Raptors to regain possession to set
up Murray's 3-point attempt.
"If they think the call is correct, then it stands, and I have
to accept it," Murray said. "I went from a total high to a total
low."
Game notes Minnesota has won five straight road games. ... Garnett had
13 rebounds. ... The Raptors placed guard Muggsy Bogues on the
injured list because of a sore right knee and activated center
Mamadou N'diaye. ... Minnesota's Anthony Peeler did not accompany
the team on the road trip due to a funeral ... Carlos Delgado of
the Toronto Blue Jays sat courtside. ... Davis had 17 points and
eight rebounds at the half. ... Williams had a season-high nine
assists.
