GAME FLOW
MIAMI (AP) Although the last-second play was designed for Tim
Hardaway, Anthony Mason and the Miami Heat will take the final
result.
Mason, the Heat's lone All-Star representative, hit a spinning
5-foot jumper with 0.8 seconds left in overtime to lift the Heat to
a 101-99 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday night.
| | The Clippers' Lamar Odom has his shot blocked by Anthony Mason, who later hit the game-winning basket for the Heat. |
Mason, who had 21 points and 10 rebounds, took a pass from
Hardaway and wiggled past Cherokee Parks for the game-winning
basket.
"It was set for Tim to go to the corner," Mason said. "They
trapped him. I went to the ball. Tim said, 'Go.' There were only
six seconds left."
And that was plenty of time for Mason to give Miami its eighth
straight win over the Clippers.
Eric Piatkowski missed a desperation 3-point attempt from 27
feet at the buzzer.
"We just couldn't do it," said coach Alvin Gentry, whose
Clippers have lost two overtime games this season to Miami. "I
don't have any complaints about our team. I thought we did the best
job we can."
The Clippers led by as many as 17 in the first half, and 16 in
the second half. Los Angeles fell to an NBA worst 0-7 in overtime
games this season.
Eddie Jones had 22 points for Miami, including a 3-pointer to
tie it at 95 in overtime. Hardaway finished with 20 points and
seven assists.
Mason's heroics came after Lamar Odom made two free throws with
6.6 seconds left. Odom was fouled by Mason.
"They have a veteran bunch of guys against a young bunch of
guys," Parks said. "(Mason) made an amazing shot. I just wanted
to stay in front of him, and I didn't want to foul him."
Hardaway could have won it for Miami at the end of regulation.
But after hitting the first free throw to tie it at 90 with 1.3
seconds left, the 11-year veteran missed his second attempt.
"We had to obviously dig like crazy just to win the game,"
Heat coach Pat Riley said. "I thought the Clippers were far
superior in any category in the first half right through the third
quarter."
Miami outscored Los Angeles 30-18 in the fourth quarter. The
Heat trailed by five early in overtime.
Hardaway had 12 of his points in the fourth, including three
3-pointers. Hardaway's 3-point shot with 1:40 to go in the fourth
gave Miami its first lead at 89-86.
Baskets by Odom and Jeff McInnis put the Clippers ahead 90-89
before Hardaway's foul shot. Odom had 19 points and McInnis added
17.
The Clippers enjoyed a 51-37 halftime lead, and were up by as
many as 17 on Odom's 3-point basket with 38.6 left in the second
quarter.
Miami's Brian Grant, who fouled out early in overtime, scored 13
of his 17 points in the first quarter.
"At the end, Mase made a geat play," Hardaway said. "He's our
All-Star. We got it to our All-Star."
Game notes
Calling a rumor in a Chicago newspaper "from The Theater
Of The Absurd," Riley firmly denied he is shopping
Alonzo Mourning for Chicago's Elton Brand. "Never, ever, ever,
ever, ever would I trade Alonzo Mourning," Riley said. "That's
absolutely untrue." ... Upset over a questionable offensive foul
call on Michael Olowokandi, who knocked down the muscular Mason in the second quarter, Gentry yelled at the officials: "That was a flop. Nobody in the NFL can knock (Mason)
down. Ray Lewis can't knock him down." ... The Heat have won seven
straight against the Clippers and are 20-5 in the series. ... McInnis bruised his left knee after
banging knees with Grant with 4:35 left in the fourth. He
returned later.
