GAME FLOW
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) The Milwaukee Bucks have special
defensive rules for only three players. Unfortunately for Jerry
Stackhouse, he's one of them.
The Bucks held Stackhouse to 16 points Sunday, 14 under his
average, and came from behind to beat the Pistons 100-96.
"We have kind of a set of Vince Carter, Jerry Stackhouse and
Kobe Bryant defense rules," said Milwaukee coach George Karl. "We
want them to take as many twos as possible, keep them away from the
rim and keep them off the free-throw line."
Stackhouse missed all nine of his field goal attempts in the
fourth quarter as well as two free throws.
"I ran out of gas," said Stackhouse, who was playing his
fourth game in five nights. "Tonight was a perimeter game, so I
was taking a lot of outside shots and they just didn't go in."
Glenn Robinson led Milwaukee with 24 points and Sam Cassell
added 21.
"We're just trying to figure out ways to win ballgames, and
tonight it took us all four quarters to do it," Robinson said.
"We just wanted to crowd Stack, which we did, but not send him to
the line. Last time we played them, he took like 20 free throws,
and it is hard to beat anyone when they are shooting that much from
the line."
Ben Wallace led Detroit with a season-best 18 points and 21
rebounds, but missed four of six free throws including two with
nine seconds left. Joe Smith had 16 and Corliss Williamson 15.
The margin was three, 95-92, when Stackhouse missed two free
throws with 1:29 left. Robinson, though, couldn't put the game away
as his jumper went in and out.
Stackhouse missed a 3-pointer with 50 seconds left, and Caffey
slammed home Allen's miss at the other end to make it 97-92 with 24
seconds left.
Williamson had a chance for a three-point play but missed the
foul shot, and Wallace missed both free throws after grabbing the
rebound.
Robinson then split two free throws to keep Milwaukee's
lead safe, 98-94 with eight seconds to play.
"That was a big win for us," Karl said. "Detroit was
dominating with hustle and energy, but we made enough shots to win
the game."
Detroit led 63-55 at intermission thanks to four players scoring
in double figures, but Milwaukee got back into the game by scoring
the first seven points of the second half.
The Pistons widened the gap back to seven, but Milwaukee rallied
to trail by just 79-77 going into the fourth quarter.
The Bucks went ahead in the opening seconds of the fourth whenLindsey Hunter was fouled on a 3-point attempt and made all three
free throws.
Detroit missed 12 of its first 16 field goal attempts in the
fourth, allowing the Bucks to go ahead 90-86 with 4:22 left.
After Smith ended the drought with a dunk, Stackhouse had a
chance to put the Pistons ahead with 2:40 left, but missed a
3-pointer.
"People in this city know that you can't run a car when it
doesn't have any gas left," Pistons coach George Irvine said.
"That's what happened to us in the fourth quarter. We were
exhausted and we started making mistakes."
