Paxson should've fired the GM, not Lucas

By Marc J. Spears
Special to ESPN.com

When the Cleveland Cavaliers pushed coach John Lucas out the door, they should have tossed general manager Jim Paxson out with him.

The record the Cavaliers had under Lucas was an awful 8-34 and he has to bear some of the blame. But considering what Paxson gave Lucas to work with, John Wooden, Vince Lombardi and Moses would have struggled leading this team.

Jim Paxson
Jim Paxson has no one to blame but himself.
OK, guard Ricky Davis has had a great and surprising season. But while rookie guard Dajuan Wagner has superstar written all over him, he missed the first 15 games with a bladder infection. Forward Darius Miles has been bothered by knee tendinitis and is still getting into shape. One team source said Wagner's minutes have been cut in order to appease Miles' thirst to play more.

Undrafted rookie Smush Parker is the starting point guard. Two veteran players, forward Tyrone Hill and Bimbo Coles, are on the injured list with injuries that don't exist. Center Zydrunas Ilgauskas' long-time foot woes limit him to no more than just 35 minutes per game, while second-round draft pick Carlos Boozer starts at power forward.

Paxson says the Cavaliers aren't making the kind of progress that they should be making this season. How's that, Jimmy? The plan all along was to have the worst record in order to earn the best position in the LeBron James sweepstakes, and you are there.

If there is something the Cavaliers need to make some progress, it's with the personnel moves, which goes back to Paxson. Getting rid of Shawn Kemp and the four years and $70 million left on his contract in August of 2000, which has given Paxson owner Gordon Gund's undivided support, was a monumental deal. But how long can he live off one trade?

Since that one good deal, he has goofed on the rest.

  • Remember when Paxson drafted Duke guard Trajan Langdon with the 11th overall pick in the 1999 draft? Well, Langdon is not even in the league now. Players that Cleveland passed over that year include Corey Maggette, Ron Artest, James Posey, Kenny Thomas, Andrei Kirilenko and Devean George.

Getting rid of Shawn Kemp and the four years and $70 million left on his contract in August of 2000, which has given Paxson owner Gordon Gund's undivided support, was a monumental deal. But how long can he live off one trade?

  • In 2000, Paxson actually made a nice move by selecting Michigan guard Jamal Crawford with the eighth pick. But instead of putting the talented guard in a Cleveland uniform, he swapped for the rights to Chicago's seventh pick in Texas center Chris Mihm. Mihm is now averaging 1.6 points in 8.5 minutes per game.

  • In 2001, Jimmy selected one of the biggest busts in NBA Draft history in Oak Hill Academy center DeSagana Diop, who had a broken foot that he has yet to fully recover from. I know he's young still, but his best attribute is just being in the way. Paxson also traded the draft rights to North Carolina center Brendan Haywood to Orlando for forward Michael Doleac. Haywood is now the starting center for the Washington Wizards.

  • Paxson professed that the Cavaliers couldn't afford to sign the NBA's assist leader last season, Andre Miller. So, he traded Miller to Cleveland for Miles. Soon after, Davis was forced to stay in Cleveland as it matched Minnesota's six-year, $34 million offer.

So what's the blueprint? At the end of last season, you said you wanted to add more veteran leadership to the roster. So what did you do, you traded Miller and Wesley Person while adding three college kids and one who should still be there. Again, so what's the blueprint?

So what's next? Draft LeBron James with the top pick in the 2003 NBA Draft and trade him for five second-round picks?

Hey Jimmy, you still have a chance to make a great personnel move and fix the franchise. Fire yourself.
