Webber says he's concentrating on playing well

Sacramento power forward Chris Webber will no doubt spend a lot of time in the near future addressing Latrell Sprewell's claims that Webber wants to join Spree on the New York Knicks' roster.

But Tuesday in Chicago, where the Kings whipped the Bulls 100-81 in the season opener for both teams, Webber addressed his future in general terms. Webber is a free agent after this season, so there is speculation the Kings could trade him soon in order to get something of value in return.
"I'm definitely going to be somewhere (next season) where I think I can win a championship," Webber, who scored 23 points against the Bulls, told the Chicago Tribune.
"I look at the players who have been in my situation -- A-Rod (Alex Rodriguez), Grant Hill -- and what I've seen is almost everybody concentrates on the season at hand. That's what I want to do. I don't want to short change Sacramento or my teammates. I want to give everything I have, whether it's just for this year or I retire here. That has to be my focus."
Newsday reported that Sprewell told radio station WFAN on Tuesday that Webber wants to play for New York either this year or next.
"Chris called me two days ago -- he wants to be here," Sprewell said on the WFAN's pregame show before the 76ers beat the Knicks 101-72 in those teams' season opener.
"There's no doubt about it. I don't think he wants to go anywhere but here, but I don't know if it will be this year or next year."
Sprewell and Webber were teammates on the Golden State Warriors for the 1993-94 season. Sprewell also said ex-Warriors teammate and current Timberwolves free agent Joe Smith, who will have his playing status determined after an arbitrator's hearing on Thursday, has the Knicks high on his list of potential employers.
