WASHINGTON The Washington Wizards will waive guard Rod Strickland on Thursday after reaching agreement to pay the guard $2.5 million of the $5 million due him if the team bought out the final year of his contract.

The deal was made to allow Strickland to be eligible for the playoffs if he signs with another team. Players signed after March 1 are ineligible for postseason rosters. Sources indicate that the Portland Trail Blazers might sign Strickland for the rest of the season.
Strickland's contract expires after next season. He is scheduled
to make $10 million, but the Wizards can buy out the final season
for $5 million.
The Post, citing an unidentified source, said the Wizards and
Strickland's agent, David Falk, has been discussing a buyout ranging
from $1 million to $4 million.
The Wizards want to get rid of Strickland, whose hefty contract
and poor work ethic have been major contributors to the team's
recent losing seasons.
Since Christmas, Strickland has been suspended for one game for
missing a road trip and has been arrested on drunken driving
charges for the third time in four years. He is currently on the
injured list with sore hamstrings.
