SAN FRANCISCO -- Golden State point guard Gilbert Arenas, trying to decide whether to re-sign with the Warriors or join another club as a free agent, will have some unfinished business in the Bay Area even if he leaves the Warriors. San Mateo County prosecutors say Arenas faces misdemeanor charges of possessing a concealed weapon and driving without a license after a June 4 traffic stop in South San Francisco. The charges could lead to a sentence of up to six months in county jail if Arenas is convicted. He has not yet entered a plea. Arenas' attorney, Michael Gaines, could not be reached for comment. Arenas' agent, Dan Fegan, told the San Francisco Chronicle that Arenas has a permit to carry the weapon in Arizona, where he attended college, though not in California. "I do not believe Gilbert knew the firearm was in the vehicle, and I'm confident these charges ultimately will be dismissed," Fegan said Wednesday. San Mateo County Chief Deputy District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe said South San Francisco police stopped Arenas for a routine traffic violation on June 4. When he reached into the glove compartment of his 2003 Chevrolet sport utility vehicle to get the registration, the police officer noticed the clip of a gun, Wagstaffe said. The officer searched the car and found a .40-caliber handgun tucked in a bag hanging from the back of the passenger seat, authorities said. Gaines appeared in court Tuesday on behalf of Arenas and asked for the arraignment to be delayed until Aug. 5. A judge granted the request. |
