LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -- Kenny Gregory scored six straight points in a decisive stretch and brought the crowd to
its feet with a thunderous dunk as No. 23 Kansas beat Baylor 80-70 on Saturday night.
The Bears (12-13, 3-11 Big 12), losers of 11 of their last 14
games, fought the heavily favored Jayhawks almost even through most
of the game and had the momentum when Gregory hit from close range.
Then Baylor forward Terry Black, who tied a Kansas opponent
record with seven steals, sliced the lead to 70-64 with a 12-footer
at the 4:35 mark.
But Gregory went back to work, hitting a follow shot and then,
after a Kansas steal, going in for the dunk to give the Jayhawks
(10-4, 21-7) a 74-64 lead with 3:54 to go.
If Baylor had been able to hit free throws, the Bears might have
won. But they were only 10-for-22 from the line, while getting
outrebounded 45-29.
Trailing by seven at halftime, Baylor pulled within three at
51-51 on DeMarcus Minor's basket midway through the second half.
Tevis Stukes, whose made five 3-pointers to set a Baylor
single-season record with 86, hit from long range and shaved the
lead to two points at 58-56.
Nick Collison and Ben Echols traded buckets, then 7-foot-1 Eric
Chenowith muscled inside for a tip-in, drew a foul and made the
free throw.
After Black was called for traveling, Jeff Boschee put the
Jayhawks on top 66-58 with a 3-pointer.
The Jayhawks, after leading by as many as 14, scored the last
seven points of the first half to take a 41-33 lead. A 13-2 run,
keyed by Boschee's two 3-pointers, had seemingly put Kansas in
command.
But Baylor came back with a 10-0 spree and sliced the lead to a
single point at 34-33 with 1:53 to go.
Stukes had 22 points for Baylor and Minor had 16. Collison led
Kansas with 19, Boschee had 16 and Gregory 13.
Baylor coach Dave Bliss, 477-284 as head coach at Oklahoma, SMU,
New Mexico and Baylor, dropped to 4-15 against Kansas.
