COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- Steven Blake began the game on the bench, gracefully stepping aside so seldom-used Matt Hahn could get the first start of his career on Senior Night.
After missing the first six minutes, Blake quickly made up for
lost time.
The freshman guard scored a career-high 17 points, put his name in the school record book and led Maryland (No. 19 ESPN/USA Today, No. 17 AP) to its ninth
straight Atlantic Coast Conference victory, 85-70 over Florida
State on Wednesday night.
Terence Morris had 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Terrapins
(22-7, 11-4), who clinched second place in the conference for a
second straight season. The nine-game ACC run is the most by a
Maryland team in a season and is two short of the school record.
Blake was 6-for-8 from the field, and his 10 assists gave him
187 for the season -- breaking the school record for a freshman held by John Lucas (178 in 1973).
"It's a good accomplishment and I'm proud of it," he said.
"But I'm not thinking about that too much right now. I'm just
thinking about winning games."
Damous Anderson scored 22 points for the Seminoles (11-15, 6-9), who have lost eight straight to Maryland and seven in a row at Cole Field House. Florida State cut a 10-point halftime deficit to 51-48 before Blake took over, hitting a trio of 3-pointers in a 12-0 run.
A foul shot by Juan Dixon and a 3-pointer by Blake put Maryland
up by seven points. Lonny Baxter then hit a baseline jumper before
Blake drilled successive jumpers from well beyond the arc to make
it 63-48 with 9:53 remaining.
"If they give me the shot, I'm going to take it," Blake
said."
"I thought his 3s were really timely tonight," Maryland coach
Gary Williams said. "We weren't doing a good job of running our
offense. ... He didn't force anything. They were all there, and he
just took them."
Florida State never got closer than 11 points the rest of the
way.
"(Blake) is not the guy you think is their first option, but he
made some key shots," Florida State coach Steve Robinson said.
"We were in pretty good position in the second half, but he really
stepped it up."
Baxter had 21 points for the Terrapins, who went 15-1 at home
this season.
Florida State led 27-24 with six minutes left in the first half
before Morris had two 3-pointers and a layup in a 21-4 run that put
Maryland ahead to stay. Dixon scored five points in the surge and
Blake chipped in with two baskets.
Hahn entered the game having scored only 32 points in four years
as the last man off the bench, but the Terrapins' lone senior went
out before the home fans in style. Although scoreless during his
initial six-minute run, he scored Maryland's final basket of the
game -- and his first of the season -- off a pass from Blake.
"I told him to get open and that I'd get him the ball," Blake
said. "He got the basket and I got my 10th assist and a
double-double."
