ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- Tony Stanley scored 14 points and Dayton finished its best season-opening road trip in 46 years with a 65-63 win over Samford in the championship game Saturday night of the CoSIDA Classic.

Dayton (2-0) won its first season-opener on the road since 1953 by beating New Mexico in Friday's first round, then won a battle of 3-pointers against Samford (1-1) in the championship game.

The Flyers and Bulldogs combined for 13 3-pointers in the second half and 17 in the game. And the game wasn't decided until Samford's Reed Rawlings missed on a 15-foot baseline jumper with 3 seconds left.

Dayton connected on four 3-pointers over a four-minute stretch of the second half to take a 48-37 lead with 12:59 left. But Samford, which ranked third nationally last year in 3-pointers, rallied on four 3s, two each by Marc Salyers and Mario Lopez.

Lopez's second 3-pointer with 2:08 left got the Bulldogs within 63-60. Tournament MVP Mark Ashman then scored on a short jumper for Dayton and Boyd Kaiser scored on a 3-point play for the final points.

Samford forced Dayton into a shot-clock violation and got two shots for the win or tie. Lopez missed on a 3-pointer with 14 seconds left, but the Bulldogs retrieved the miss. After a timeout, Samford went to Rawlings, who along with Lopez led Samford's scoring with 15 points each.

Cain Doliboa scored 10 points for Dayton.

Samford, which went to the NCAA tournament for the first time in its history last year with a 24-6 record, opened the tournament with a 68-60 win over No. 15 St. John's.

Dayton ended New Mexico's 41-game homecourt winning streak against non-conference opponents with a 70-57 win Friday.

"It's always important to win your first two ball games, and it's important to us that it's a championship as well," said Dayton coach Oliver Purnell.

"Playing them is like having a root canal. I've never actually had one, but they just wouldn't go away," he said. "Our shot selection wasn't good down the stretch, but it was good enough when we needed it."

Dayton shot 53 percent in the second half and was 6 of 10 on 3s. Stanley hit 4 of 6 3-pointers and the Flyers had only six turnovers for the game.

Samford coach Jimmy Tillette said the Bulldogs gained much confident and momentum from their impressive play in the tournament.

"Last night was probably the biggest win in school history," Tillette said. "Tonight, we were down by 11 twice in the second half and came back. We had the ball in the air to win it and it just didn't go. We were one basket away from winning it."

Samford is the favorite to win the Trans America Athletic Conference and Tillette said the trip West will help there too.

"We're a young team and both of these games will help us down the stretch," he said.
