WASHINGTON (AP) -- Georgetown coach Craig Esherick blamed the
Hoyas' slow start against Coastal Carolina on exams.
Michael Sweetney had 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead Georgetown (No. 23 ESPN/USA Today, No. 24 AP) to a 78-60 victory over Coastal Carolina on Tuesday
night.
| | In this time of midterm exams, Mike Sweetney, center, and the Hoyas passed Coastal Carolina with flying colors. |
"It's an exam funk that we get in every time we play this time
of year," said Esherick, who has been with the program for 24
years. "I can never remember us ever since going back to when I
was playing here, which is a long, long time ago -- I cannot
remember us ever playing well during exams."
Gerald Riley added 17 points for the Hoyas (8-0), who are off to
their best start since the 1989-90 season, when they opened 14-0.
Oliver Hinckson and Clint Reed each had 16 points to lead the
Chanticleers (1-6).
Georgetown broke it open after halftime with a 17-6 run to take
a 50-37 lead. Coastal Carolina made just two field goals in the
first nine minutes of the second half.
However, strong free-throw shooting kept the Chanticleers in it.
Hinckson made a pair of free throws to cut the Hoyas' lead to 50-44
with 9:53 remaining.
But Sweetney made 1-of-2 free throws to key a 16-5 run to give
Georgetown a 67-49 lead with just over five minutes remaining. The
Chanticleers never threatened again.
"I thought the two freshmen, Mike and Gerald, really pulled us
out of that (funk) more than anything else," Esherick said. "I
was surprised that the two people who got us out of (the funk) were
freshmen. Mike and Gerald played great. They did a great job of
pulling us out of a hole, because we were definitely in a hole."
Coastal Carolina's quick guards gave the Hoyas fits early.
Georgetown went with a smaller, quicker lineup to compensate,
and Coastal Carolina was done in by 27 turnovers.
Leading scorer Torry Butler and Derrick Robinson sat out the
second game of two-game suspensions by coach Pete Strickland for
not upholding the standards of the program.
