MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) -- Georgetown tightened its defense and went to its inside game in the second half to get a good start in the Big East.

Anthony Perry scored 15 points to lead six players in double figures as the Hoyas (No. 20 ESPN/USA Today, No. 19 AP) beat West Virginia 90-66 Wednesday night.

Georgetown (12-0), which is enjoying its highest ranking in five seasons, is off to its best start since going 14-0 in 1989-90.

West Virginia (8-3) was held to 39 percent shooting after halftime. The Mountaineers committed 21 turnovers in the game and Georgetown got 11 steals.

"At the half we talked about playing our defense and that leading to points and that is what happened," Perry said. "We got into the passing lanes, pressured the ball and their shots, and it mixed them up and rattled them a bit. Then we were able to get our offense going."

Ruben Boumtje Boumtje scored all 12 of his points after halftime as the taller Hoyas dominated the inside game early in the second half to pull away from a halftime tie.

Perry's 3-pointer capped a 13-0 run for a 53-42 lead with 17:04 remaining in the game. The other five baskets in the run came from inside.

"Teams have a problem matching up with us because of our size," Boumtje Boumtje said. "And we have a lot of depth, so we can wear people down."

West Virginia got no closer than seven the rest of the way.

"I really thought at halftime we had a great chance to win this game," West Virginia coach Gale Catlett said. "Their inside game is very good. We just didn't have the answer defensively."

The start of the conference season was welcome for the Hoyas, who had not played an opponent with a winning record in a span of eight games. In fact, Georgetown's previous seven opponents entered their games against the Hoyas with a combined 10 wins.

"Every team in this conference can compete, and it is important to win on the road," Georgetown's Kevin Braswell said.

In the first half, the Mountaineers held Georgetown to 39 percent shooting and led by as many as eight early. But Braswell scored 10 of his 14 points over a three-minute stretch and Demetrius Hunter's 3-pointer with three seconds left in the half tied the game at 40.

It marked the 10th straight game the Hoyas had not trailed at halftime.

Mike Sweetney added 12 points for Georgetown, and Hunter and Gerald Riley had 11 apiece. Braswell also had 12 assists.

Lionel Armstead scored 20 to lead West Virginia. Calvin Bowman had 18 points, but just two in the second half. Tim Lyles had 14 points.
