AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ Maurice Evans scored 18 points and No. 24
Texas used a 15-3 run to open the second half for a 78-71 victory
Saturday night over Oklahoma State in the Big 12 opener for both
teams. Brian Boddicker added 17 points for Texas (11-2, 1-0), which had to withstand a 26-point game by Oklahoma State's Maurice Baker and the Cowboys' 27-of-40 free throw shooting. Texas ran its home winning streak to 21 games and extended Oklahoma State's long losing streak in Austin. The Cowboys (8-3, 0-1) haven't won in Austin since 1974 and the Longhorns are the only South Division team Oklahoma State hasn't beaten on the road since the Big 12 started four years ago. Boddicker's tip-in on the first possession of the second half started the Longhorns' run and broke a 39-39 halftime tie. Evans converted a three-point play and converted another layup that put Texas ahead 53-42. Oklahoma State couldn't match Texas offensively when Baker, who was called for three charging fouls in the first half, picked up his fourth foul early in the second half and sat on the bench for five minutes while Texas built its lead. When he did return, Baker hit a jump shot and scored eight points on four driving layups as Oklahoma State closed to 63-58 with 8:52 to play. But Baker, who earlier shook off being poked in the right eye, fouled out three minutes later and the Cowboys couldn't close the gap without him on the floor. The teams traded leads nine times in a fast-paced first half. Chris Ogden's 3-pointer put Texas ahead 28-21 and Maurice Evans' baseline dunk and three-point play helped the Longhorns carve out a 35-25 lead, the biggest of the half. Baker then sparked a 10-0 Cowboys run with a free throw, a 3-pointer and a steal that led to a fastbreak layup by Melvin Sanders that tied it at 35. Fredrik Jonzen scored 14 points and Sanders had 13 for Oklahoma State. Texas is 10-0 when scoring at least 70 points this season.
