Duke extends ACC road win streak to 21

RECAP | BOX SCORE

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Shane Battier called Atlantic Coast Conference road wins gold nuggets. If so, No. 2 Duke has been the richest team in the league over the last two seasons.

The Blue Devils, who lead the nation in 3-pointers per game, got 22 points each from Battier and Jason Williams, and 12 baskets beyond the arc for an 84-78 victory over North Carolina State on Wednesday night.

"We got what we expected," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "We knew State would play us unbelievably hard and they did. I thought we played well."

The win by the Blue Devils (14-1, 3-0 ACC) extended their ACC record road winning streak to 21 straight and they are 49-2 in their last 51 regular-season league games.

"We're trying to hoard as many (road wins) as we can," Battier said. "You're never rich enough."

Duke is averaging 10.4 3-pointers per game. Battier was 6-for-11 from 3-point range and Williams scored all his points in the second half as Duke beat N.C. State for the eighth straight time and 21 of the last 24 meetings.

"We told Jason, 'Hey, you're one of the best point guards in the country,"' Battier said. "It wasn't his best half, but he was able to put that behind him and come out with a killer look in the second half. He really gave us a spark."

The Wolfpack (8-5, 0-2) had shot 56.6 percent in its last four games, but managed a season-low 39 percent against Duke's swarming defense. N.C. State's ACC start is its worst since the 1996-97 season -- Herb Sendek's first year in Raleigh.

Damien Wilkins had 21 for N.C. State, while Anthony Grundy added 18.

Sendek announced after the game that Archie Miller, the team's point guard and top 3-point shooter in the nation, played just five minutes because of a stress fracture in the lower part of his left leg.

"I thought their kids responded well without him, but that's a bad thing," Krzyzewski said of Miller's injury, sustained before last weekend's Virginia game. "He's having an unbelievable year. For him to be injured is sad. I feel badly for him."

Sendek said the 5-foot-9 Miller, shooting better than 60 percent from 3-point range, could be lost for the season.

"Our reality is we've got to move on," Sendek said.

N.C. State trailed by 19 in the second half and used a 14-4 run to pull within six down the stretch. But Chris Duhon made a clutch 3-pointer with 4:11 left to slow the rally.

"That shot kind of silenced the crowd," Krzyzewski said.

After the Wolfpack got to 76-71 late, Williams made 8-of-10 from the foul line over the final 48.6 seconds to seal it.

The Wolfpack fans came armed with "3" placards, but they were soon on the floor as Battier shot the Blue Devils to victory.

Duke led 41-31 at the break, but was soon up by 17 as Battier hit two more 3-pointers and Williams added a shot from beyond the arc and a dunk as Sendek was forced to call a timeout to halt the rally.

"It doesn't take a lot as we've all witnessed against Duke to go from 18 to 30 by the time you take another sip of your Coke," Sendek said. "At that time our guys dug in and made a good comeback."

Duke was up 10 at halftime without getting a point from scoring leader Williams, who had averaged 23.1 over his last eight games.

Battier and Mike Dunleavy more than made up for a lack of production from Duke's star point guard.

Battier had 16 of Duke's 23 points in the opening 11 minutes, scoring 14 straight at one point.

N.C. State closed to 25-23 after trailing by seven, but Dunleavy hit a pair of 3-pointers and converted a three-point play over the final 5:23 of the half as the Blue Devils began to pull away.
