Winthrop highlight reel

Winthrop Eagles
RECORD: 21-9 COACH: Gregg Marshall | SEASON RESULTS | SEASON STATS
OUTLOOK
  • First round: Lost to Oklahoma, 74-50

The Winthrop Eagles are an athletic team, but they are also very small. They only have one big player, Eyo Effiong, who is 6-foot-9. He's from Nigeria and his nickname is Bubbles; in Nigeria, dancing is called bubbling, and he's a very good bubbler. Effiong might be the most improved player in the Big South. He plays aggressively and can post up and rebound.

    Get the Coach's Edge

Let the experts at Coach's Edge get you ready for the NCAA Tournament with an inside look at the Winthrop playbook.

Point guard Tyson Waterman really makes Winthrop go. He led the Big South in assists this year and is mentally strong. He has a full-court game and can hit the three-pointer. The other guard is Roger Toxey, who is their defensive stopper. He's strong and capable of putting up good numbers, but he loves to put it on the floor and go to the glass.

Greg Lewis, a transfer from Howard and their leading scorer, is a great leaper. He hits about 41 percent of his three-pointers. He can be either play a small or big forward because of his size at 6-foot-6. He has an effective inside-outside game and went for 18 points and 18 rebounds in the Big South tournament final.

Winthrop has good offensive balance, with nearly four people averaging double figures in scoring. The Eagles have four seniors, and five juniors, so they are pretty experienced team. They have also had some quality wins, beating Missouri at Missouri. They lost to Maryland in OT. Coach Gregg Marshall makes them play a tough schedule to get them prepared for the tournament. The Eagles, who only shoot 66 percent from the foul line, will need to get the Sooners in foul trouble to stay close. But can they defend Eduardo Najera? No-jera. -- Nancy Lieberman-Cline, ESPN
