Most expect him back coaching in a year

 By Andy Katz
ESPN.com

Fired Hall of Fame coach Bob Knight told an emotionally-drained Indiana University team Sunday night that he wants to continue coaching.

Hoosier players, who were interviewed by ESPN on Sunday night, and assistant Mike Davis, who spoke with ESPN.com, said Knight said he didn't want to stop coaching.

That would fall in line with what Knight's colleagues said Sunday night. Those close to Knight told ESPN.com they expect the 60-year-old Knight to lay low for a year, but resurface when people least expect it. They also said they expect Knight to still pursue Dean Smith's career victory total. The former North Carolina coach is first on NCAA Division I victories with 879 while Knight is fifth, 116 behind.

"I don't think he's done coaching," said Baylor coach Dave Bliss, who was one of Knight's assistants at both Army and Indiana. "I say that only because he's a teacher."

Indiana president Myles Brand said he would endorse Knight in any future endeavor. But the future employer would have to understand why he was dismissed at Indiana.

Colleagues close to Knight said they expected Knight to land in a place like a service academy (although not back at Army), an Ivy League school or somewhere remote like in the Big Sky. There are presently no other head coaching openings.

Plenty of other high-profile, veteran coaches have returned after retiring or being removed from their past job like Lou Henson (from Illinois to New Mexico State), Wimp Sanderson (from Alabama to Arkansas-Little Rock) to Jerry Tarkanian (from Nevada-Las Vegas to Fresno State).
