Michigan State, Stanford still 1-2

ARLINGTON, Virginia -- Michigan State strengthened its grip on the top spot in the ESPN/USA Today college basketball poll released Sunday.

The defending national champion (11-0) tuned up for the Big Ten Conference schedule with easy victories over Bowling Green and Wright State last week. Michigan State owns the nation's longest winning streak at 22 games and will head into league play without a loss for only the second time in school history.

The Spartans received 26 of 31 first-place votes and 770 points from a panel of 31 Division I coaches.

Stanford (11-0) remained second with four first-place votes and 744 points after capturing the Cable Car Classic with wins over Fordham and Santa Clara.

The top five positions in the poll remained unchanged with Duke (11-1), Wake Forest (11-0) and Tennessee (13-1) following Michigan State and Stanford. The Blue Devils received the other first-place vote and trail the Cardinal by only 28 points.

Florida (10-1) and Kansas (11-1) both climbed one spot to sixth and seventh, respectively. Illinois (10-3) dropped two slots to eighth despite defeating Illinois-Chicago in its only game of the week.

Virginia (10-0) and Connecticut round out the top 10.

Seton Hall (9-2) is next, followed by Wisconsin (9-1), Syracuse (11-1), North Carolina (9-2) and Arizona (7-4). The Wildcats will be without coach Lute Olson, who began an indefinite leave of absence on Saturday to be with his seriously ill wife, Bobbi.

Oklahoma (11-1), Maryland (9-3), Alabama (10-1), Southern California (10-2) and Georgetown fill out the top 20.

Mississippi (12-1), Texas (10-2), Iowa (11-2), Cincinnati (9-3) and Notre Dame (8-2) complete the poll.
