Carroll steps in for fired Fletcher

DENVER – The University of Denver named Terry Carroll as coach of its men's basketball team Sunday.

Carroll had been an assistant coach at Iowa State for two seasons before being named associate head coach last year. He helped guide the Cyclones to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances the past two seasons.

He replaces Marty Fletcher, who was fired after a disappointing season.

"After a very thorough national search, we have hired a winner," said M. Dianne Murphy, director of athletics and recreation at DU.

"Terry Carroll brings outstanding coaching credentials, experience, success and passion for the game to this head coaching position. I couldn't be more pleased with all of the qualities he has displayed and the experience he brings to Denver, and I look forward to a great partnership with Terry in the years to come."

Prior to his arrival at Iowa State, Carroll spent nine seasons as the head men's basketball coach at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa. He was named junior college coach of the year four times and twice led his team to national titles.

Earlier he spent four years as an assistant at Drake University. Carroll played one season at Oklahoma State before transferring and finishing his career as the captain of the University of Northern Iowa. He earned a master's degree from Winona State in 1984.
