Treloar has the itch to be a head coach again

ESPN.com news services

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University assistant basketball coach John Treloar has applied for the vacant Baylor basketball head coach's position.

ESPN.com's Andy Katz reported earlier this week that Treloar was one of a group of coaches to have expressed interest in the opening. Thursday's editions of the Indianapolis Star reiterated that interest.

"I have a great situation at Indiana but I still have a desire to be a head coach," Treloar told the Star. "I don't think anyone can fault me for that. At the same time, I want to make it clear that I'm very content with the position I hold, too ... but the Baylor position is one that I would like to explore further."

Treloar spent six years as a head coach in the Continental Basketball Association with the Chicago Rockers, Wichita Falls Texans and Connecticut Pride.

Baylor coach Dave Bliss and athletic director Tom Stanton resigned last week after school investigators found violations within the men's basketball program involving improper financial aid and drug tests that were not properly reported.

Earlier this summer, the program was rocked by the disappearance of Patrick Dennehy, whose body was found in a field last month. Former Baylor player Carlton Dotson has been charged with Dennehy's murder.

On Tuesday, the school organized a search committee to hire a new coach. Baylor president Robert Sloan said the school is looking for a coach with a "known reputation for integrity" and "a proven recruiter, mentor and winner."

According to Katz, other coaches who have expressed interest in the Baylor job through intermediaries include Sam Houston State's Bob Marlin, Southwest Missouri State's Barry Hinson, Texas-Pan American's Bob Hoffman, Stephen F. Austin's Danny Kaspar, Louisiana-Lafayette's Jessie Evans, Oklahoma assistant Jimmy Tubbs and Morehead State's Kyle Macy.

Treloar is beginning his seventh season at Indiana, and his fourth under coach Mike Davis. Davis told the Star that he supports Treloar.

"I'm 100 percent behind John in whatever he wants to do," Davis said. "He's a great coach, and all head coaches know that their assistants hope for something more. I think this could be a great opportunity for him. I see it as a win-win situation."
