Over the past 12 months, Iowa State players and coaches have had found plenty of trouble off the court.

April 28, 2003: Des Moines Register publishes photos of head coach Larry Eustachy at party in a Columbia, Mo., apartment during the early-morning hours of Jan. 22. Photos show Eustachy holding a beer can and kissing female students on the cheek just hours after ISU's loss to Missouri. The Register also quotes Kansas State students describing Eustachy's actions at a fraternity party in Manhattan, Kan., after the Cyclones lost at Kansas State in January 2002.

March 28,, 2003: Sophomore center Jared Homan is arrested for public intoxication after he was found lying on a sidewalk in downtown Ames, according to police reports. Homen, 20, of Remsen (Shana's hometown, interestingly enough), tried to run away when officers approached. They found the 6-9 center hiding under a vehicle, where he had a strong odor of alcohol and failed field sobriety tests. Five days later, Homan pleaded guilty to the charges and was fined. According to a police report, the 6-foot-9 starting center tried to run away when officers approached. Officers say they found him hiding under a vehicle. He had a strong odor of alcohol and failed field sobriety tests. Police records did not indicate a blood-alcohol level for Homan. Eustachy releases a statement saying, "We have met with Jared and discussed with him the serious nature of this incident. He will be disciplined internally, consistent with team policy."

March 3, 2003:Assistant basketball coach Randy Brown resigns after federal prosecutors charge him with possession of child pornography and obstruction of justice. He later pleaded innocent and the trial is set to begin on May 5. The possession charge accused Brown of having the pictures on computer disks recovered by investigators on Jan. 24. According to an affidavit filed in U.S. District Court, U.S. Postal inspectors seized computers from Brown's home and office on that date, where the images were discovered. Brown also allegedly destroyed diskettes containing additional images in his office, even though he had been warned not to do so. The postal searches took place seven months after federal investigators identified Brown as having participated in online chats with a "purported 15-year-old female." during those chats, Story County records show he solicited sex from the female. If convicted, Brown faces five-year prison term on the child pornography charge and a maximum 10-year term for obstruction, according to prosecutors. He is currently undergoing treatment for depression, which he started several years ago following the genetic-related deaths of two of his four daughters. They were three and four years old. Brown is a former high school basketball coach from the state in the early 1980s, and a 1981 graduate of Iowa. He was hired by Eustachy in 1999.

February 23, 2003 Reserve forward Clint Varley is arrested for drunken driving and later suspended indefinitely from the team. Varley's blood alcohol level tested at .199 after he was stopped by Iowa State campus police at 2:03 a.m. He was stopped after he made an illegal right turn at a stoplight. According to the report, he admitted he had been drinking beer and had red, bloodshot eyes. Varley's "indefinite suspension" turned out to be two games, as Varley returned for the season-ending home game against Missouri.

October 27, 2002: Junior college transfer Chris Alexander is arrested on charges of "serious assault" after his alleged role in a bar fight early in the morning. Police said they responded to a call about a fight at Sips bar around 1:40 a.m., when they arrived, they found bar employees holding Alexander on the ground. Employees told police there had been a fight on the dance floor and as they were escorting Alexander out of the bar, he hit one of the workers in the face. In Iowa, serious assault is considered a serious misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in jail and a $1,500 fine. Alexander, too, was suspended indefinitely. He played in nine games before leaving the school in February to return home to Chicago to be with a sick daughter.

July 19, 2002: Omar Bynum is arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated and possession of marijuana. He was pulled over at 11:30 p.m. after Ames police observed him driving without a seat belt and without his headlights turned on. The police report said the investigating officer noticed a "strong odor of marijuana" coming from the car and found a small amount in his possession. He, too, was suspended indefinitely, though he only missed on exhibition game. It was his first offense.
