FRESNO, Calif. (AP) -- Derrick Ward rushed for 156 yards and two
touchdowns to lead Fresno State to a 44-13 victory over Colorado
State on Saturday.
Fresno State (4-2) took a 3-0 lead in the second quarter on Jeff
Hanna's 37-yard field goal, but Colorado State (3-2) came back with
a 20-yard scoring pass from Matt Newton to Dallas Davis.
Fresno State broke open a close game in the second half with
four Colorado State turnovers, three on interceptions.
The first of Fresno State's four interceptions in the game led
to a 29-yard scoring pass from Billy Volek to Saleem Mahdi with
just 10 seconds left in the half, making it 10-7.
Tierry Sams' 22-yard interception return, coupled with a
personal foul call, gave Fresno a first-and-goal at the 10-yard
line early in the third quarter. Marcellus Armstrong scored on a
7-yard screen pass from Volek to give Fresno State a 17-7 lead.
Hanna's 18-yard field goal upped the lead to 20-7 before
Fresno's third interception of the game set up another field goal,
this time from 27 yards out.
Colorado State cut the lead to 23-13 in the fourth quarter on a
15-yard TD pass from Newton to Frank Rice. But Ward scored on a
75-yard touchdown run less than a minute later.
Ward added a 6-yard scoring run to seal the victory for Fresno
with 6:39 left in the game.
Fresno State's final interception of the game was returned 27
yards by Nick Burley for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
