CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) _ Dusty Burk, subbing for ailing star quarterback Kevin Glenn, threw for five touchdowns and ran for one more Saturday in leading Illinois State to a 55-48 win over Southern Illinois.

The Redbirds (6-2, 4-0 Gateway), ranked 12th in the latest Div. I-AA poll, trailed 21-0 and didn't grab the lead until Burk hit Walter James with a 39-yard pass with 2:46 left. It was to be the winning score.

The Salukis (3-5, 0-4) broke a 28-all tie on a 46-yard scoring pass from Sherard Poteete to Cornell Craig, the third time the two players hooked up for a score. They broke a 35-all tie on a 45-yard fumble recovery return by Andre King, and opened up a 48-41 lead on Poteete's 33-yard keeper.

The two teams combined for 1,230 yards of total offense, with Illinois State gaining 727 yards.

Burk was 27-of-46 passing for 346 yards. Poteete was 21-of-39 for 305 yards and four touchdowns.

Willie Watts rushed 19 times for 222 yards and two TDs for Illinois State, while Southern Illinois' Tom Koutous had 16 attempts for 132 yards and one score.

Glenn was lost to a season-ending knee injury Oct. 9. The Redbirds fell last week at South Florida for their only Div. I-AA setback of the season.
