N.C. State escapes against determined Duke

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -- Jamie Barnette's 7-yard quarterback draw in overtime saved North Carolina State's season from slipping away as the Wolfpack rallied to beat Duke 31-24 on Saturday.

The Wolfpack (5-3, 2-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) scored 10 points over the final 7:19 of regulation and then used seven plays to score first in the extra period to beat Duke (1-6, 1-3) for the sixth straight time and nine of the last 10.

Duke's Sims Lenhardt kicked a season-best 50-yard field goal as time expired to send the Blue Devils to their fourth overtime in their last nine games. The Wolfpack tried to ice the senior with two straight timeouts, but Lenhardt cleared the crossbar by a good 10 yards.

After the Wolfpack went up by seven in the extra period, Spencer Romine was sacked by Clint Johnson on Duke's first play for an 11-yard loss, and the Blue Devils couldn't recover.

N.C. State started the season 3-0, but had lost three of its last four and was staring another defeat in the face before Barnette's 12-yard scoring pass to Koren Robinson and Kent Passingham's 27-yard field goal helped put the Wolfpack back in the bowl picture.

B.J. Hill revived Duke's running game with 107 yards and two touchdowns prior to the overtime.

The Blue Devils had an opportunity to go up by 10 late in the third quarter, but wasted a 15-play drive of more than seven minutes when the usually reliable Lenhardt shanked a 35-yard field goal attempt.

The Blue Devils also drove to the N.C. State 16 with 12:34 left, but Romine's pass was intercepted by Tony Scott at the 6.

The Wolfpack then drove 94 yards to tie the score at 21-21 with 7:19 left, Barnette hitting Koren Robinson, who caught 10 passes for 129 yards.

Each team benefited from a roughing-the-passing penalty to score in the first quarter. The Wolfpack got a 10-yard touchdown run from Rahshon Spikes less than five minutes into the game, and Hill raced 32 yards for Duke's score. Hill's run was the longest of the season for the Blue Devils.

Romine threw for 70 yards in an 83-yard scoring drive in the second quarter to give Duke a short-lived 14-7 lead.

Spikes took an innocent-looking swing pass a minute later, got a block from wide receiver Bryan Peterson and raced 74 yards to tie the score at 14-14. It was Barnette's 55th TD pass, tying him for second on the ACC career list.

Hill then gave Duke its first halftime lead this season, capping a 68-yard drive with a 6-yard scoring run one minute before intermission.
