FRESNO, Calif. (AP) -- Billy Volek threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score to lead Fresno State to a 47-18 rout of Rice on Saturday in the Western Athletic Conference.
Derrick Ward rushed for 148 yards on 19 carries and scored on a
long touchdown run for Fresno State (7-3, 4-1 WAC), which took over
sole possession of first place in the conference.
Rice (5-5, 4-2) came in averaging 270 yards per game on the
ground with its wishbone offense, the third-best in the nation. But
the Owls finished with just 99 yards on 46 attempts.
Fresno State dominated the first quarter, scoring 20 points and
holding Rice to 1 yard.
Volek's 1-yard sneak capped a 53-yard drive on Fresno State's
first possession.
Fresno State scored again on a 20-yard pass from Volek to Paris
Gaines. Wide receiver Rodney Wright lofted a 49-yard scoring pass
to Saleem Mahdi to up the lead to 20-0 just before the end of the
quarter.
Rice got on the scoreboard in the second quarter on a 10-yard
run by Anthony Griffin, and cut the deficit to 27-10 at the half on
a 27-yard field goal by Derek Crabtree.
Volek hit Charles Smith with an 18-yard scoring pass early in
the third quarter. Chad Richardson's 1-yard run and 2-point
conversion run for Rice trimmed the lead to 34-18.
Fresno State added a 5-yard pass from Volek to Bernard Berrian.
Richardson was 9-of-13 for 123 yards but was limited to just 11
yards rushing on 17 carries. Richardson had been averaging 73 yards
per game on the ground.
