CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) _ Nick Haas kicked the extra point after Maurice Murphy's fourth-quarter touchdown, giving The Citadel a 7-6 victory Saturday over Virginia Military Institute.

Murphy rushed for a career-high 97 yards for the Bulldogs (2-8 overall, 1-6 Southern Conference), including a 5-yard touchdown run with 5:12 left, tying the game at 6-6 before Haas' game-winning kick.

VMI (1-10, 0-8) took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter when Richard Holland picked up a Drew Johnson fumble and ran it 72 yards into the end zone. An excessive celebration penalty pushed the extra-point spot back to the 18-yard line, and Matt Maxey's kick went wide left.

Each team missed two field goal attempts.
