BRADENTON, Fla. -- Former Florida State quarterback Adrian McPherson, at the center of a police gambling investigation, plans to ask the NCAA to investigate rumors of gambling among members of the school's athletic department, his attorney said.

McPherson, who started four games this season for the 16th-ranked Seminoles, was kicked off the team last month after he was accused of stealing a blank check.

McPherson was later arrested and that case led to the school asking state authorities to help them investigate possible gambling activities on campus

"On Monday, a letter will be forwarded to the NCAA requesting the NCAA conduct an investigation, if it has already not initiated one on its own, about the allegation put forth by these rumors,'' McPherson's attorney, Grady C. Irvin Jr., told the Bradenton Herald for Saturday's editions.

"We feel this is the only way we can clear Adrian's name and further point out that Florida State University has failed to step forward and dispense with these unbelievable and untrue insinuations that Adrian is somehow engaged in gambling,'' Irvin said.

On Thursday, university vice president John Carnaghi said police "are investigating rumors and hearsay'' regarding McPherson, but added that the investigation does not extend "to any other student athletes at FSU.''

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement assigned members of its Tallahassee office along with investigators from more than one of its seven regional offices to assist local police and campus police. They have questioned some of McPherson's teammates, as well as student trainers and managers.

Irvin has said his client has never bet on a sporting event.

Florida's high school "Mr. Basketball'' and "Mr. Football'' during the 2000-01 school year, McPherson was dismissed from the team Nov. 25, charged with stealing a blank check from R&R Truck Accessories in Tallahassee, a misdemeanor, and with receiving stolen goods after the check was cashed, a felony.

The check was later forged by someone, made out for $3,500 and cashed. The money has not been recovered
