Starters Cavil, Humphrey suspended
Associated Press

IRVING, Texas -- Texas senior defensive lineman Aaron Humphrey, wide receiver Kwame Cavil and two other players were suspended late Thursday by the Longhorns' coach for team rules violations.

Coach Mack Brown, in a tearful news conference at a Dallas hotel, also suspended backup linebacker Jamal Joyner and another backup, defensive end J.J. Kelly. He would not elaborate on the rules violations.

Brown shortly before midnight had come from a team meeting where the announcement was made. The four players briefly addressed the team there, but the coach would not disclose what they said.

"We have just held a team meeting, which was one of the most emotional that I have experienced," Brown said in a prepared statement from the Austin university. "This was the hardest thing I have ever had to do.

"The four men involved in violating team rules are great young men and have done a tremendous job for our football team and The University of Texas," he said. "We all love and care about them very much."

Humphrey is a senior while Cavil and Kelly are both juniors. Joyner is a redshirt freshman.

Humphrey led the team in sacks the last two seasons. Cavil caught 100 passes for 1,188 yards this season, both school records.

Freshman Cory Redding will replace Humphrey in the weekend's starting lineup, Brown said, while junior Jamel Thompson was Cavil's probable replacement at wide receiver.

The Longhorns were favored to beat Arkansas on Saturday in the Cotton Bowl.

Texas (No. 18 ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, No. 14 AP) and the Razorbacks first played in 1894. They were both charter members of the Southwest Conference in 1915.
