| HOUSTON -- Two former University of Houston greats say they would like to join Clyde Drexler and Leroy Burrel as alumni who
returned to coach at their alma mater, a Houston television station
reported Monday.
Andre Ware, who won the Heisman Trophy while a quarterback at
Houston, and former Cougar quarterback David Klingler told KRIV-TV
that they would like to become the next Cougars head coach,
replacing Kim Helton, who was fired.
But Klingler and Ware have no coaching experience, and Houston
athletic director Chet Gladchuk said he'd like a former Cougar at
the helm -- but experience comes first.
"If I could find a Cougar that could lead and we have
confidence in, I think that would be a direction I'd certainly
consider," Gladchuk said.
Gladchuk has done it twice in other sports, hiring Drexler as
the basketball coach and Burrel as the track coach.
Ware said he thinks he can overcome his lack of experience,
citing five seasons in the NFL and three more in the Canadian
Football League.
"It's a special situation and it takes a special person to go
in there and get kids to come there," Ware told KRIV. Ware said he
thinks he could recruit the type of players who go to the
University of Texas and Texas A&M.
Klingler, who led the nation in total offense in 1990, said his
seven years in the NFL would help him as a head coach.
"I've experienced a lot of different systems for a lot of
different coaches," Klingler said.
Tommy Kaiser, the assistant head coach at Oklahoma State, said
Monday he will also pursue the head coaching job. He also is a
former player and coach at Houston. | |
