SAN DIEGO -- Ted Tollner, whose teams have won just five games in the last two seasons, was fired as the coach at San Diego State on Monday.
The Aztecs, who have lost their last five games, are 42-48 in eight seasons under Tollner.
"We have not won enough over the last two years," athletic director Rick Bay said. "There is a perception in the community that we're not making the progress that we ought to be making. The only way to change that thinking and resurrect community confidence in the program is to change personnel."
Tollner, 61, will coach his final game Saturday at home against Wyoming. The Aztecs have a 2-8 record this season.
"The last two years, we have not got it done," he said. "To have five wins over two seasons coming into our last game is not acceptable. I understand that."
Tollner approached Bay to discuss his job status after a 17-3 loss to Utah on Saturday.
"I'm not bitter about where we are right now," said Tollner, who was an Aztec assistant from 1973-80. "I'm just disappointed, extremely disappointed, because this program is so important to me."
San Diego State has had losing records four of the last five seasons and five times overall since Tollner took over in 1994 after seven seasons as an NFL assistant.
Tollner was fired as Southern California's coach after four seasons in 1986.
The Aztecs' 3-8 record last season equaled the worst since 1988. Their last winning season was 1998, when they went 7-5 and played in the Las Vegas Bowl.
Tollner accepted a position as special assistant to Bay with a focus on fund-raising, but has not ruled out seeking another coaching job.
"All I know is that I want to work," Tollner said. "Whether it's here or somewhere else, I have something positive to contribute."
Tollner turned down an offer to join the staff of Cleveland Browns coach Butch Davis earlier this season. He has also worked for the Buffalo Bills, San Diego Chargers and then-Los Angeles Rams.
A coaching search at San Diego State will begin immediately.
