NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said Tuesday he has no interest in the coaching position at Notre Dame.
"I have no intention of speaking with or dealing with anybody else," Stoops said in a conference call with media. He declined to comment on whether a representative from Notre Dame had contacted him about the position.
Stoops' name arose as a possible candidate for the job after Notre Dame fired Bob Davie on Sunday. Another candidate for the job is Stanford head coach Tyron Willingham. Notre Dame has asked for and been granted permission to talk with Willingham about the Irish's opening, ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reported. A meeting between Notre Dame athletic director Kevin White and Willingham had not yet been set.
Stoops has more on his mind than Notre Dame. No. 11 Oklahoma (10-2) is preparing for its first Cotton Bowl game appearance Jan. 1. But Stoops will be without offensive coordinator Mark Mangino, who was named Tuesday as head coach at Kansas.
Stoops said passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Chuck Long will be interim offensive coordinator with Mangino's departure, which is immediate.
Mangino is the second offensive coordinator to leave in the Stoops era. Mike Leach was hired two years ago by Texas Tech.
"I think it's a compliment to our staff that people are interested in them," Stoops said.
He said Long could be appointed Mangino's permanent replacement later, but Stoops also said he also may look outside his staff.
Graduate assistant Bubba Burcham will work with the offensive line in the meantime, which was also Magino's duty. Tight ends coach Jonathan Hayes already helps with the tackles, Stoops said. Information from the Associated Press was used in this report. |
