Bellotti says he will not become a candidate for Irish

Associated Press

EUGENE, Ore. -- Oregon football coach Mike Bellotti said Friday that he met with Notre Dame athletic director Kevin White, but has no interest in taking the job.

"I was contacted by Notre Dame and talked with them," Bellotti said. "I said, `Thank you very much. I appreciate being considered, but am not, at this point, a candidate for that job and will not be one."'

Oklahoma's Bob Stoops and NFL coaches Jon Gruden of Oakland and Steve Mariucci of San Francisco also have said they are not interested in the job, which opened up Sunday when Bob Davie was fired. Notre Dame has reportedly received permission to meet with Stanford coach Tyrone Willingham.

Bellotti, who last season rebuffed overtures from Southern California and Ohio State, is the winningest coach in the Pacific-10 Conference during his tenure at Oregon. The Ducks completed their first 10-victory regular season last week and await a likely Fiesta Bowl appearance with Colorado.
